Cabrilo Earns USL Honors; The Complete Lineup For A Busy Soccer Week In Pittsburgh

Talk about a busy and potentially monumental week of soccer in Pittsburgh.   With a lot, but not all, of the action centered at the new mecca for soccer in the Steel City, Highmark Stadium.
First though, let’s start off with some news of the day…

Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and former Robert Morris University Colonial standout, Miro Cabrilo was named to the USL Team of the Week.  Cabrilo scored in the 18th minute of the Riverhounds 2-1 victory at Richmond on Saturday night.
Here’s what’s on tap:
WEDNESDAY, MAY 27
Pittsburgh Riverhounds U23 vs K-W United
Highmark Stadium – 2 p.m. (with bonus showing of Europa League Final in Highmark Stadium Sports Bar)
The Riverhounds’ USL Premier Development League season kicks off as Jose Rife, assistant coach of the senior team, will be leading team made up mostly of current and recent college players in their second season in the USL-PDL.   The Highmark Stadium sports bar will be open during the afternoon. Fans can watch the Europa League Final between holders Sevilla and Ukraine’s Dnipro from 2:45 p.m.
 
Pittsburgh Riverhounds vs Tampa Bay Rowdies – Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Third Round Match
Highmark Stadium, 7 p.m. kickoff
Look for an extensive preview in Pittsburgh Soccer Report tomorrow morning of this USL-NASL clash between the Riverhounds of United Soccer League (USL) and the second place team in North American Soccer League (NASL), the storied Tampa Bay Rowdies.
What’s at stake?  The winner will host Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, the 2013 Cup Champs, on June 16 or 17 in the Fourth Round.
FRIDAY, MAY 29 
imageFort Pitt Regiment NPSL Season Opener at Indiana Fire Juniors
The Red Coats open the 2015 season on the road with a two game swing through Indiana and Ohio. Their season open is at Indiana Fire Juniors on Friday, May 29. The Midwest Region finalists play Cincinnati on Sunday, May 31 on the return trip.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds Annual College Showcase Tournament 
College Showcase takes place at Highmark Stadium with teams from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Illinois set to compete over three days. The Riverhounds U-17 girls’ team kicks off the event against Allegheny Force F.C. on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m.
SATURDAY, MAY 30
FA Cup Viewing at Highmark Stadium Sports Bar 
England’s F.A. Cup Final between Arsenal and Aston Villa will be shown on Saturday at the Sports Bar as part of the build-up to the Keystone Derby festivities. The game kicks off at 12:30 p.m.
Pittsburgh soccer legend and former Villa player Paul Child will be in attendance. Fans will have the chance to win an autographed Riverhounds jersey, game tickets and other prizes while enjoying fish and chips and $4 beer specials on Carlsberg, Yuengling and Bud Light.

Keystone Derby Leg 2 (of 4)- Pittsburgh Riverhounds vs Harrisburg City Islanders
Highmark Stadium, 7 p.m. kickoff
The City Islanders come to Pittsburgh for the second installment of this season’s Keystone Derby Cup series.The Hounds opened their USL campaign with a 5-2 win over their Pennsylvania rivals in Pittsburgh on March 28.  The City Islanders currently sit one point ahead of the Hounds in the USL’s Eastern Conference Standings.
SUNDAY, MAY 31
Fort Pitt Regiment at Cincinnati (NPSL)  
Day 3 of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Annual College Showcase Tournament
College Showcase wraps up with their final day of competition at Highmark Stadium with teams from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Illinois set to compete.

John Krysinsky has covered soccer and other sports for many years for various publications and media outlets. He is also author of 'Miracle on the Mon' -- a book about the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, which chronicles the club, particularly the early years of Highmark Stadium with the narrative leading up to and centered around a remarkable match that helped provide a spark for the franchise. John has covered sports for Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, DK Pittsburgh Sports, Pittsburgh Sports Report, has served as color commentator on Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC broadcasts, and worked with OPTA Stats and broadcast teams for US Open Cup and International Champions Cup matches held in the US. Krysinsky also served as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at his alma mater, Point Park University, where he led the Pioneers to the first-ever winning seasons and playoff berths (1996-98); head coach of North Catholic boys (2007-08), associate head coach of Shady Side Academy boys (2009-2014).
