The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette‘s Meg Ryan is reporting that the Riverhounds will be signing Sergio Campbell, pending clearance by the USL. Campbell is the 2015 MLS SuperDraft first-round pick of the Columbus Crew.
The Jamaican was released by the Crew on February 12, and was training with the Hounds on Monday at Highmark Stadium. In addition to one appearance for Columbus in 2015, he played twice for their 2015 affiliate, Austin Aztex.
Campbell is a former University of Connecticut standout where he earned AAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in his senior year — and started in all 64 games in his three seasons at UCONN.
Campbell has made two appearances for the Jamaican National Team, with both coming in the 2010 Caribbean Championship. Previously, he was a member of the Jamaican U-15, U-17 and U-20 sides, including wearing the captain’s armband for the U-20s.
It has also been widely known and previously reported that former Central Catholic and Robert Morris goalkeeper Brenden Alfery has also been training with the team, although there has been no announcement of his signing either.
