I am covering the U.S. Open this week for Pittsburgh Sports Report — but sure enough — I always find myself around soccer related happenings.
During the first rain delay at the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club on Thursday, around mid-morning, many players and caddies took shelter, while others turned their attention to soccer — taking in the exciting second half of England-Wales game in UEFA Euro 2016 Tournament.
Englishmen Lee Westwood and Luke Donald along with their caddies, made their way to the media center and took in the exciting finish of England’s 2-1 win over Wales in the Euro 2016 tournament, as Daniel Sturrage scored a brilliant goal in added time to lift the Three Lions to victory.
As the group came in, 2014 U.S. Open champ, Martin Kaymer, sat next to me.
When I asked Kaymer, a German, he told me he didn’t care about the result of the English-Welch game, as he was looking forward to watching his National team, Germany, take on Poland later in the day.  (Germany and Poland played to 0-0 draw).
One player who didn’t make it over, was Rory McIlroy, who is a big Northern Ireland fan — as he was on the course when his National team beat Ukraine 2-0.

John Krysinsky has covered soccer and other sports for many years for various publications and media outlets. He is also author of 'Miracle on the Mon' -- a book about the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, which chronicles the club, particularly the early years of Highmark Stadium with the narrative leading up to and centered around a remarkable match that helped provide a spark for the franchise. John has covered sports for Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, DK Pittsburgh Sports, Pittsburgh Sports Report, has served as color commentator on Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC broadcasts, and worked with OPTA Stats and broadcast teams for US Open Cup and International Champions Cup matches held in the US. Krysinsky also served as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at his alma mater, Point Park University, where he led the Pioneers to the first-ever winning seasons and playoff berths (1996-98); head coach of North Catholic boys (2007-08), associate head coach of Shady Side Academy boys (2009-2014).
