Angulo Scores, Helps Strikers Upset MLS' Orlando City To Advance To US Open Cup Quarterfinals

Former Pittsburgh Riverhounds forward Jose Angulo (pictured right)– who won the USL’s Golden Boot and MVP in 2013 with the Hounds — has helped his current team, Fort Lauderdale Strikers to a second upset of a MLS opponent in the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Angulo’s goal in the 12th minute, on a perfectly played through ball to beat an offside trap, gave the Strikers a 1-0 lead over Orlando City FC.
After Angulo’s goal, OCFC’s Kevin Molino (another former USL player), scored the equalizer three minutes later.
In the 66th minute, Molino and Fort Lauderdale’s Maicon Santos were sent off, reducing both teams to 10 players. Orlando had the better of play, but keeper Diego Restrepo came up big for the third straight game in the Open Cup, making eight saves.
The Strikers appeared to headed for a third straight shootout in Open Cup play — they also beat the USL’s Richmond Kickers on penalty kicks — when Brazilian left back PC came forward to score the winner with a low, curling effort past Orlando keeper Earl Edwards, Jr.
The Open Cup win for the NASL Strikers was pretty monumental when you consider that they had never beaten an MLS team going back to their days as Miami FC, have now beaten two MLS teams in this year’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
In the Fourth Round, Angulo’s Strikers knocked off another team with a recent Pittsburgh Riverhounds player — Rob Vincent‘s D.C. United. Despite Vincent scoring on penalty kick after playing the full 120 minutes in a game that ended 0-0, the Strikers advanced.
The Strikers are the only non-MLS team to have advanced to the U.S. Open Cup’s quarterfinals.
In addition to scoring the goal to help the Strikers advance on Wednesday, Angulo has 2 goals and 1 assist for Ft. Lauderdale in 10 league games.
One of those goals included this spectacular header on June 7.
