PITTSBURGH — Alan Ramos scored 31 seconds into the first overtime period to give Point Park University men’s soccer a 2-1 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson College in its season opener on Thursday night at Highmark Stadium.
Ramos’ tally made quick work of the overtime, which came about when W&J scored in the 83rd minute to force the extra period.
Point Park (1-0) had a 1-0 lead on Roberto Whitley’s goal in the 23rd minute. The freshman from Liverpool, England, headed in a cross on the right post from Rejep Mukhammedov. Also assisting on the play was Nathanael Van Der Walt.
The Pioneers held onto the 1-0 lead for 60 minutes until Dwight Donis tied things up with a long-range shot. Donis’ goal came after a free kick when Point Park took a penalty just to the outside of the box.
It didn’t take long in the overtime to end things. The Pioneers worked the ball up the right side, and Troy Dolanch’s cross found Ramos near the 6-yard line. With a running header, Ramos beat the defense and found the back of the net.
Point Park will have a short turnaround before its next game. The Pioneers visit Marygrove (Mich.) on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Pioneers beat Marygrove at home, 1-0, in 2015 when Ramos scored in double overtime.
