From La Roche Athletic Department Report
Once again, La Roche College men’s team found themselves heading to an overtime game at home after 90 minutes of scoreless play.
This time around, they counted on a pair of brothers from Burrell to lift them to its second OT victory of the season.
Tom Spagnolo buried a thru ball from brother Peter Spagnolo to break a scoreless tie and lift the Redhawks to a 1-0 OT win over Marietta.
La Roche is now 2-0 in overtime games and 4-3 on the season.
Neither team could find a first half goal on the wet turf. La Roche held a 6-5 shot advantage entering intermission despite not attempting a shot until the thirtieth minute. Tyler Grebur and Ximo Vicent gave the Redhawks their best chances with Grebur lifting a shot just inches over the crossbar and Vicent forcing Marietta’s Tyler Sholl to make a diving stop.
Marietta nearly found the game winner with less than five minutes left but La Roche’s defense stepped up to extend the game into overtime. Redhawks’ goalkeeper Austin Gorman (Ambridge) made the initial save on Alex Gruss’ shot but he was taken out of the play. Marietta collected the rebound at point-blank range but defender Dylan Weyand (Butler) made two straight kick saves to keep the game scoreless.
La Roche upped the tempo in overtime with their game winner coming off a counter attack.
Marietta turned the ball over at midfield and the Redhawks’ took advantage when P. Spagnolo found T. Spagnolo cutting through the defense for his first career goal.
Gorman made eight saves in the shutout to improve to 4-1 on the year.
La Roche will travel to Geneva College on Wednesday for an AMCC vs. PAC matchup.
Last year, the Redhawks beat Geneva 1-0 on Vicent’s game winner.
