The University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team closed out a two-game ACC road swing Sunday afternoon, falling to the 24th-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame 4-0 in South Bend, Ind.
One of the most dominant offenses in the ACC, Notre Dame wasted very little time getting on the scoreboard, tallying its first goal of the afternoon in the fifth minute. Kaitlin Klawunder knocked a header in off of a corner kick from Monica Flores to give the Fighting Irish a 1-0 lead.
Notre Dame would extend its lead in the 14th minute as a cross from Kaleigh Olmstead resulted in a goal from Jennifer Westendorf. Just four minutes later the Fighting Irish would take a 3-0 lead when Olmstead headed the ball into the back of the net on an assist from Natalie Ward.
In the closing minutes of the first half, a cross into the box from Meghan Doyle gave way for a header goal from Karin Muya as the Fighting Irish would take a 4-0 lead into the break.
The second half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to find the back of the net and Notre Dame walked away with a 4-0 victory.
With the loss, Pitt falls to 1-9-1 (0-3-0 ACC). The Fighting Irish out-shot the Panthers 23-5 with an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Taylor Francis came up with five saves, compared to just two from Notre Dame’s keeper.
Pitt will return to action on Saturday, hosting reigning ACC champion and third-ranked Florida State at 2 p.m. from Ambrose Urbanic Field. The game, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. can be seen live on the ACC Network Extra via WatchESPN or the WatchESPN app. Pitt will celebrate Canadian Heritage Night as fans can receive a free order of poutin
