Ian Larson scored twice – including the game-tying goal in the 81st minute – as Duquesne and George Mason battled to a 2-2 draw on Rooney Field. It was the school record-tying ninth overtime game for the Dukes, who are 5-0-4 in extra time this season.
DU outshot GMU 19-7 and had a 16-3 advantage in corner kicks, but could only get the ball by Patriots keeper Steffen Kraus, who finished with seven saves, twice.
Evan Kozlowski finished with four outstanding saves for the Dukes. Mason got on the board first, when Tolu Ibikunle scored in the 18th minute. Grant Robinson sent a free kick from left to right where it was headed by Cullen Hunter to the feet of Ibikunle who one-touched it by Kozlowski. Mason had a chance to add to its lead in a wild sequence in the 27th minute. Following a throw, Ibikunle won the ball and put it on net from deep in the box. Kozlowski got a hand on it, but the ball made its way to Tunde Akinlosolu, who had his shot from dead center stopped by Kozlowski.
A third shot off Akinlosolu’s rebound hit the crossbar, but was negated by an offside. Duquesne started strong with six corner kicks in the first 13 minutes. Ryan Landry’s hard shot from the left side of the box was stopped by Kraus in the 10th minute. DU also had another chance, but Bryan Fegley’s header in the 14th minute went directly into the arms of Kraus.
DU outshot GMU 6-3 and had a dozen corners to zero for the Patriots in the opening 45. Duquesne tied it in the first minute of the second half when Ryan Landry headed a throw in from Cody West directly to the front of the net where it was headed in by Larson for his first goal of the season.
Mason answererd with a run by Ryan Mingachos down the left side that drew multiple DU defenders. Mingachos crossed it to Akinlosolu who tapped in into the open right side of the net. In the 71st minute, a streaking Zach Hall took a pass off the heel of Landry and got off a shot from near the top of the box that was deflected to the corner by Kraus. Larson tied it when Fredrik Borenstein played the ball out to Brandon Walbert who found Larson on the far left side. Larson placed it in the upper right corner from 20 yards out. Kozlowski made an outstanding save on a point blank shot from Henning Dirks in the 100th minute to send it to the second overtime.
“Tonight was an interesting one – we had our chances, but couldn’t put them away. We kind of got away from ourselves a little bit, but that’s college soccer sometimes,” Chase Brooks, Duquesne Head Coach.
“We earned a hard-fought point, and we look to bounce back against Saint Joseph’s on Saturday.”
