From Duquesne Athletic Department Report
Duquesne (10-5-3, 6-2-1) used goals from Linnea Faccenda and Malea Fabean in their 2-0 victory over Dayton on Thursday night at Rooney Field. The victory marks the first win in regulation over the Flyers since Oct. 1, 1999.
Kyra Murphy made three saves to record her seventh shutout of the season, tying her record for the most single-season clean sheets with Kelly O’Neill (1996, 1998).
Faccenda got behind the Flyers’ defense in the sixth minute, taking a pass from Katie O’Connorand beating UD keeper Kaelyn Johns on the left side for the score. Faccenda was inches away from a second goal in the 31st minute when she took a feed from O’Connor, but hit the inside of the left post.
The Flyers’ Alexis Kiehl almost tied the contest in the 54th minute, but her header hit the crossbar. Duquesne got an insurance goal in the 69th minute when Jorden Thornton’s free kick was headed by Abby Losco and put in by Fabean during the scrum in the box.
UD had a few scoring chances in the waning minutes – Nicolette Griesinger’s free kick from 30 yards out resulted in two headers before Kiehl’s header was blocked by a Dukes defender in the box in the 85th minute. Two minutes later, Libby Leedom’s cross went completely through crease, but there were no Dayton takers. And with less than two minutes remaining, Meghan Blank dribbled down the left side unopposed, but her shot was stopped at point blank range by Murphy.
COACH ALVINE QUOTE: “It’s great to get back in the win column — I’m happy with the win, but even more happy about the way we managed the game being up a goal. We were able to kill the game off in the second half by keeping possession, and I’m thrilled for the girls, and thrilled for another three points. Our goal is to finish as high up in the standings as possible, so this is a big step in the right direction.”
UP NEXT: The regular season ends on Sunday when Duquesne hosts La Salle on Senior Day. Kickoff is at 1:00 PM
