@Pitt_MSOC Draws Syracuse in #ACC 1St Rd

The Pitt men’s soccer team will travel to Syracuse, N.Y., Wednesday, Nov. 2, to take on No. 6 Syracuse in the opening round of the 2016 ACC Tournament.

 

Participating in ACC postseason play for the first time, the Panthers enter as the No. 12 seed while the Orange are No. 5.

 

With the new format of the conference tournament, all 12 teams earn a trip whereas just 10 participated in previous years. The top four seeds (North Carolina, Wake Forest, Louisville, Clemson) have first round byes to the quarterfinals, all played at campus sites. The championship game will be played at MUSC Health Stadium in Charleston, S.C.

 

Pitt and Syracuse will clash for the 21st time in program history. The series is tied 8-8-4 with the Orange taking the most recent meeting in 2015.

The Pitt men’s soccer team (2-12-3, 0-6-2 ACC) fell 2-1 Friday night at Thompson Field to No. 23 Virginia Tech (10-4-3, 3-4-1 ACC) in the final regular season game of 2016.

 

The Hokies struck first in the 31st minute and again in the 74th. Pitt netted its lone goal in the 87th minute.

 

Virginia Tech out-shot the Panthers 20-5, while corners were an even 5-5. Freshman goalkeeper Jacob Rooth played the full 90 minutes and made seven saves.

 

Humberto Montero of Virginia Tech put in the first goal of the night. VT’s Gino Rossi tacked on the second from 23 yards out.

 

In the 87th minute, the Panthers drew a penalty kick that was put in by senior Matt Venanzi.

 

Pitt resumes action Wednesday, Nov. 2 in the first round of the ACC tournament. The opponent and campus site is yet to be determined.
