Rhode Island’s Stavfros Zarokostas scored in the 104th minute to give Rhode Island a 2-1 win over Duquesne in the regular season finale on Rooney Field.
It was the 11th overtime match of the season for the Dukes – two more than the previous school record. The game-winner came when Peder Kristiansen sent a ball into the box where Duquesne’s Aleksander Christensson got a foot on it. The ball bounded to Zarokostas who sent it goal ward. The ball glanced off of Christensson and into the right side of the net for the game-winner.
The goal dropped the Dukes to 6-1-2 at home, ending the quest to become the fourth in school history to post an undefeated home record. Nils Leifhelm had seven saves for URI, while Evan Kozlowski had two for the Dukes. Rhode Island got on the board in the 10th minute when Kristiansen sent a free kick into a tightly bunched group deep in the box. The six-three Dickson managed to get a head on it and send it by Kozlowski to put the Rams up 1-0. Duquesne had a pair of chances in the 29th minute when a drive from Austin Stout was punched over the goal by Leifhelm. On the ensuing corner kick, Cody West had a near-post header hit the crossbar and drop down, but not cross the goal line. The Dukes outshot the Rams 12-2 in the opening 45 minutes. Senior Bryan Fegley was taken down in the box in the 50th minute and converted the PK for his first goal of the season to tie it. URI had a chance to take the lead when Kristiansen came hard down the left side and found Emil Jesman Sunde with a nice pass that Jesman Sunde put just over the crossbar in the 58th minute.
Rhody outshot DU 15-7 in the second half and overtime to close the total shots gap to 19-18 by the match end.

“Two tough teams were fighting for a place in the A-10 Tournament tonight, and we came in knowing that they were going to throw everything they had at us. I thought we battled well for 90 plus minutes, but that’s the game of soccer. Tonight wasn’t our night, and all credit goes to Rhode Island,” said Chase Brooks, Duquesne Head Coach.
