The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have received defender Connor Maloney on loan from Columbus Crew SC. Maloney, who was drafted in the Third Round by Crew SC in this year’s MLS SuperDraft, joins the club on a match-by-match basis.
Making one substitute appearance at right back for Crew SC this season, the addition of Maloney will help provide depth for the Hounds defense, as the club is expected to be without the services of both right back Ritchie Duffie (head) and center back Ryan Adeleye (hamstring) for Saturday’s tilt against Louisville City FC. In addition, the club has been without Rich Balchan since April 29 after the right back suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.
In total, the Hounds have had nine players make appearances in the back four so far this season.
Prior to being drafted by Crew SC, Maloney, 22, starred collegiately at Pennsylvania State University from 2013-16. During his time with the Nittany Lions, Maloney tallied 26 goals and 17 assists in 73 appearances, earning All-Big Ten First Team honors on three occasions, including Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in 2014.
“Connor is someone I know well from playing against him at Penn State, and he’s always been one of my favorite players,” said head coach Dave Brandt. “Quick, aggressive, skilled, and a strong fighting spirit, I’m looking forward to having the chance to work with him on the field.”
A native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Maloney will wear No. 37 for the Hounds.
