Pitt men lose at No. 10 UVA in OT

From University of Pittsburgh athletic department report

No, Pitt’s men’s soccer team can’t beat every ranked opponent on the road.

On Friday, they dropped a 2-1 double overtime thriller to No. 10 Virginia at Klöckner Stadium.

With the loss, the Panthers move to 8-7 overall and drop to 2-5 against ACC opponents. Virginia improves to 10-2-3 overall and are now 3-1-3 against conference foes. The Panthers had won previous road games against nationally ranked opponents Notre Dame and Columbia.

The Cavaliers out-shot Pitt 6-1 through the 107 minutes and finished the match with a 9-1 advantage in corners.

Virginia struck first late in the opening half, off the foot of Raheem Taylor-Parkes in the 40th minute.

The Panthers responded in the 76th minute, thanks to a nice move inside the box by freshman Alexander Dexter as he beat the UVA goalkeeper one-on-one. Dexter’s goal was his sixth of the season.

Pitt and the Cavaliers were knotted 1-1 at the end of regulation and again at the end of the first overtime.

Virginia found the golden goal in the 107th minute as Jean-Christophe Koffi made a nice move to get past two Pitt defenders and sent in a laser from the top of the box to the upper left 90.

The Panthers resume action Tuesday, Oct. 24 when the Akron Zips make the trip to Pittsburgh. Pitt’s final non-conference match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field in the Petersen Sports Complex — and I’ll be there for the action.
