WVU women beat Tennessee to improve to 2-1-1 in spring

From WVU Athletic Department report

West Virginia University women’s soccer team took down Tennessee, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, the Mountaineers first struck in the 50th minute when junior defender Bianca St. Georges fired a shot from the top of the box to the back of the net off a deflected corner kick. Later on, junior forward Grace Cutler found freshman forward Lauren Segalla inside the box in the 69th minute. Segalla beat the Tennessee goalkeeper far post from 10-yards out to extend WVU’s lead to 2-0.

“I thought we did some really, really good things,” Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “Everyone is hunting consistency, and that’s what we’re trying to get. I was pleased with some of the things we were able to accomplish and, obviously, getting the win.”

WVU finished with a 25-10 advantage in shots. The Mountaineers registered 14 shots on-goal in the win, including 10 in the second half. Tennessee earned four shots on-goal.

West Virginia also finished with an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rylee Foster made four saves for WVU before she was relieved midway through the second half by freshman Kayla Thompson. The Mountaineers held Tennessee to just two shots after halftime.

With the victory, WVU improved to 2-1-1 on the spring.

“Tennessee is a very good team,” Izzo-Brown added. “They were playing in a different system, and we just made some adjustments in how to find good, attacking space.”
