Colonials’ Olguin’s First Career Goal Lifts RMU men to win at Howard

Robert Morris’ men’s soccer team defeated Howard, 1-0, in its final non-conference contest on Saturday.

Senior midfielder Kai Olguin tallied his first career goal in the 78th minute, netting the winner in style as he converted a bicycle kick inside the 18. Fellow fourth-year Zac Sherman earned the assist.

Robert Morris opens Northeast Conference (NEC) action on Friday, Sept. 28 at 3:00 p.m. when it travels to Bryant.

RMU Women split opening weekend of NEC play

Robert Morris’ women’s team split a pair of contests that opened up Northeast Conference (NEC) play.

On Friday, the Colonials came back from an early deficit to defeat Wagner, 2-1, on a sunny and blustery day at the North Athletic Complex.

Robert Morris was led by the duo of Jane Schleicher and Kristina Kelley, who each found the scoresheet. Schleicher and Kelley entered the season as the NEC’s leading returning scoring duo, having amassed 44 points (17g, 10a) between the two of them in 2017.

Despite the early deficit, the Colonials dominated possession and generated 19 shot attempts – 12 being on net – to Wagner’s (1-8-0, 0-1-0 NEC) three. Schleicher in particular fired 10 shots, with eight being on target. The 10 shot attempts are the most for a RMU player in eight seasons (10, Ayana Davis vs. Howard; Sept. 23, 2010) and tied for the second most in single-game program history.

The Seahawks opened the scoring 46 seconds into the match when Maria Nunez found herself alone in the box off a Luisa Barone cross and slotted it home. The hosts nearly answered in the fifth minute, when Kelley headed one into the box for Schleicher, but Katie Viscardi was up to make a save.

Kelley netted her first goal of the season in the seventh minute. Bailey Farabaugh skirted a pass to the junior forward along the 18 line, and she carried it to her left before finishing with a low shot inside the far right post.

Schleicher’s eventual winner came in the 30th minute when she dribbled it from the left flank into the right side of box, then burying a grounder inside the far left post. The senior forward’s ninth goal of the season moves her into a tie for sixth in single-season history and five shy of tying the school record.

Schleicher remains third all-time at RMU in goals (20) and fourth in points (44). Kelley moved into a tie for 10th in goals (11) and 11th in points (31) with her tally.

A penalty kick in the 27th minute was the difference on Sunday as the Robert Morris University women’s soccer team fell to one of the Northeast Conference favorites, Central Connecticut, 1-0.

Duquesne women off to winless start in Atlantic 10 

It wasn’t exactly the start to Atlantic 10 season that Duquesne women’s team were hoping for after a road loss to UMass on Thursday, then returning home Sunday for a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Dayton.

Sunday’s result added to senior goalkeeper Kyra Murphy’s impressive streak of not allowing a goal on the Rooney pitch this season, as she made seven saves in recording her 25^th career shutout.

“I would say a draw is a fair result. This was a typical Atlantic 10 game, a battle back and forth,” Al Alvine, Duquesne head coach, said after Sunday’s match. “We didn’t get three points today, but good for the freshmen and sophomores to get this kind of experience and play under this type of pressure. The team did not show and resiliency and did not back down, so I am proud of the effort.”

Up next, the Dukes (4-4-1, 0-1-1 A-10) will host LaSalle La Salle on Thursday night at Rooney Field.

Duquesne men fall to Oakland

After beating Robert Morris on Thursday in the battle of crosstown rivals, Duquesne men couldn’t keep the momentum going against a tough Oakland University squad, losing 2-0 on Sunday at Rochester, Mich.

“We had a great battle this afternoon. Their record is what it is for a reason, they are a quality opponent. We were right there with them. We can take away a lot of positives from today’s game,” Chase Brooks, Duquesne’s head coach, said. “We played extremely well at times, but again, we made a couple of little mistakes that we have to learn from as we continue to prepare for Atlantic 10 play.”

The Dukes held the Golden Grizzlies without a shot until Evan Sawula scored off a deflection in the 31st minute. Sawula’s goal was the first shot on goal – by either team – in the match.

OU took the momentum from the goal to post three shots – two of which were blocked and one saved by Dukes keeper Robbie McKelvey – and a pair of corner kicks in the ensuing seven minutes.

The Dukes finished the half with their fifth corner and second shot – this one from Nathan Dossantos – in the final two minutes of the half. Oakland ended the half with a 4-2 advantage in shots, including a 2-0 edge in shots on goal. Duquesne had five corners to four for OU.

Olav Hovstad registered DU’s first shot on goal in the 58th minute. The Dukes had three corners in the first 16 minutes of the second half but were unable to capitalize.

Oakland put the game away on a Jacob Moore goal on a breakaway following a deflection with seven seconds left in the game.

OU outshot DU 7-3 in the second half (11-5 for the game). The Golden Grizzlies had five shots on goal to one for the Dukes.

The Dukes, who have started at least six freshmen in all seven matches this season, started six first-year players.

DU returns to action at Wright State on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 p.m.

Pitt women endure 6-0 loss at NC State

On Sunday, Pitt’s women’s team continued to grind its way through a tough road trip in early portion of its ACC schedule, losing to No. 16 NC State in a 6-0 decision.

NC State would strike twice in the opening half, extending its advantage with four goals in the second to secure the victory.

Pitt (4-5-1, 0-3-0 ACC) will continue its road swing on Sunday, Sept. 30, traveling to Blacksburg Va., for a 4 p.m. meeting with Virginia Tech.

Point Park University women’s soccer extended its win streak to four games in a row and completed a 2-0 conference weekend with Saturday’s 4-1, River States Conference victory at Cincinnati Christian University.

The Pioneers (4-4, 2-0 RSC) started conference play with this weekend’s road trip, which began with Thursday night’s 7-0 win at Brescia (Ky.). Point Park scored three unanswered goals to secure the victory at Cincinnati Christian.

Freshman Tia Horew once again scored late in the first half, this time to break a 1-1 tie and forge the eventual game-winning goal. Her tally in the 44th minute pushed the Pioneers into the halftime locker room with a 2-1 lead.

Point Park added on two more goals after the break to put the game away. Freshman Britney Adrian (56′) and sophomore Morgan French (59′) scored three minutes apart in the second half.

Bailey Boyd had given the Pioneers the early 1-0 advantage with a goal in the eighth minute. CCU (0-9, 0-2 RSC) eventually tied things up on Ashley Parrett’s strike in the 36th minute.

But the Pioneers had the offense, and it came from familiar scorers. Horew has now scored a goal in three straight games while Boyd, Adrian and French have all scored in back to back games. Defensively, Point Park has given up just one goal in its current win streak of four games. Parrett’s tally ended a streak of more than 300 minutes without a goal allowed.

Point Park pounded out 28 shots versus CCU with 21 of them going on goal. CCU managed 12 shots (5 on goal). Point Park attempted 12 corner kicks compared to zero for the Eagles.
