College Wrap-Around: Draw vs Dayton disappointing for Duquesne women

Both Pitt and Duquesne women’s teams are struggling a bit more than they want to be with the season winding down.

On Sunday, both had disappointing results.

DUQUESNE WOMEN

Picked to finished third in the Atlantic 10, Duquesne women are struggling to hit any kind of rhythm this season. On Sunday, they hosted Dayton, settling for a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Rooney Field, which will only make things more difficult to make the postseason.

“To lose two points in a game like today, is critical. The point today doesn’t really help us in our quest to make the tournament. At the end of the day we have to be better at finishing games out and more clinical at finishing teams off. Until we figure that out, it’s always going to be difficult for us,” Al Alvine, Duquesne’s coach said. “We still have two more games left, an opportunity for 6 more points. We can hope for the best and finish as high up at the table as we can.”

The highlight of the match for Duquense came when Hannah Nguyen scored on a well-placed chip from 23 yards out got the Dukes on the board in the 75th minute.  The former Penn-Trafford standout, was set up by Lexy Kendro (Norwin) pass.

Davidson got the equalizer when Cameron France’s header hit the crossbar, but Kendall Bushick was there to take the rebounded header past Dukes’ keeper Kyra Murphy

With Richmond’s loss to George Mason, the Dukes jump over the Spiders into 10th place in the A-10 standings.

PITT WOMEN

Pitt women continue to battle through tough ACC schedule on Sunday, losing to sixth-ranked University of Virginia, 7-0 at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.

Pitt (4-9-1, 0-7-0 ACC) succumbed to an excellent Virginia team that would jump out to a 4-0 lead in the opening half before solidifying the victory with three second half scores.

The Panthers return to action Thursday, hosting No. 13 Florida State at 7 p.m. in the first of the final two home games of the 2018 regular season. Pitt welcomes Notre Dame Sunday at 1 p.m. before traveling to No. 8 Boston College on Thursday, Oct. 25 to conclude the 2018 campaign.

WVU MEN

Senior midfielder Joey Piatczyc tied the match with 13 seconds left in regulation and scored the game-winner three minutes into overtime to propel the West Virginia University men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Akron on Saturday night.

The Mountaineers (9-5-0, 2-0-0 Mid-American Conference) trailed 1-0 12 minutes into the second half, but responded with an offensive attack that resulted in the game-tying goal at 89:47, and the game-winner at 92:27. Following their goal, the Zips (5-5-2, 0-1-1 MAC) were held to just one shot the rest of the match, while West Virginia had 10.

“We had to fight from behind tonight, we didn’t want to have to play from behind, but I thought our soccer was excellent today, and our goals were just reward for the way we played,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “We played about as well as we’ve played all season, to be quite honest with you. We moved the ball well and created great opportunities. Their goalkeeper made a couple of big saves, and the same on our side. We just kept plugging away, kept staying with it, and it eventually paid off. Two fantastic setups from Jorge Quintanilla as well.”

With the win, WVU sits atop the MAC standings, with six points, following two weekends of play. The Mountaineers return home to host second-place and No. 23-ranked SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. ET.
