GAME DAY UPDATES  

4:04 – FINAL – Blue Mountain 1, Mars 0

There will be no Mars, Oakland Catholic rematch in 3A PIAA playoffs.

3:50 – FINAL – South Park 3, Villa Maria 1.  Finally, South Park gets past Villa Maria in a State playoff game. On to PIAA semifinals.

3:33 – Blue Mountain. 1. Mars 0 10:59 left in the game. Sydney Riegel’s goal gives Blue Mountain the lead.

3:31 – FINAL – Seneca Valley girls fall in PKs. Souderton advances to the semifinal to take on Peters Twp. There will be no all-WPIAL semifinal in girls 4A this year.

3:10 – 2nd half — score remains the same …  South Park 1, Villa Maria 0

2:45 – HALF – Blue Mountain and Mars are scoreless (3A). Winner gets Oakland Catholic.

2:35 – FINAL – Oakland Catholic nips Hampton 2-1. (3A)

2:28 – With 16:33 left to play Souderton ties the Seneca at 1-1

1:50 – GAME OVER – Peters Township advances!

Jillian Marvan’s goal in the 46th minute holds up as the game-winner. Peters will now await the winner of Seneca Valley and Souderton.

1:45 – GAME OVER – Freedom advances!

Freedom defeats Wilmington, 6-0.

We will have a WPIAL girls team in PIAA final. Freedom moves on to PIAA Girls 1A semifinal to take on Winner of SSA-Bentworth

 

1:04 –  GOAL – Peters Twp goes up 2-1 in the 46th minute.  Jillian Marvin gets the go-ahead goal for PT.

12:45 – GOAL – Cumberland Valley – with six minutes left in the half, Cumberland Valley gets equalizer. It’s 1-1 between CV and Peters Township (Girls 4A)

12:25 – GOAL – Peters gets the early lead on Cumberland Valley. Goal from CeCe Scott.

12:15 – TWO GOALS! – Freedom not wasting any time, again. The Bulldogs are up 2-0 on Wilmington already.

4A 

Seneca Valley (17-2) vs Souderton (13-3-6) – 1 pm – at Chambersburg

  • The Raiders boys and girls teams will both make the trek to Chambersburg on Saturday. The girls team escaped the first-round with a win over Central Dauphin in a match that went to penalty kicks.
  • Souderton beat District 1 runner-up 2-0 in the first round.

Peters Township (17-4) vs Cumberland Valley (District 3 champions) – 12 Noon – at Altoona’s Mansion Park Stadium

  • After falling behind early in its match on Tuesday vs Erie McDowell, Peters raced back for three unanswered goals to advance to the quarterfinal. After conceding a goal in the 11th minute, it didn’t take long for the Indians to respond. Just over a minute later, sophomore Sarah Heisinger evened the score. Freshman CeCe Scott delivered the game-winning goal for the Indians in the second half and Heisinger put the finishing touches on with her second goal of the game.
  • Cumberland Valley beat Pennsbury on Tuesday as Taylor Jede‘s goal in the 14th minute as the difference.

3A

Oakland Catholic (19-1) vs Hampton (18-5) – 1 pm – at North Allegheny

  • The WPIAL champion Eagles, riding a 19-game winning streak, opened the PIAA playoffs on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Holidaysburg, and will now face a fellow WPIAL team, Hampton. Victoria Calhoun scored in the first half and Anna Sproule and Hannah Henn added goals in the second half of Oakland Catholic’s first round win. The Eagles did allow its first goal in eight games on Tuesday.
  • The Talbots beat District 10 champions Hickory, 3-1, as Logan Nicklas scored twice and Courtney Coholich added one.

Mars (19-1) vs Blue Mountain (District 11 champions) – 1 pm – at Bald Eagle

  • With only one loss this year, to Oakland Catholic in the WPIAL final, Mars are determined to make a serious push to Hershey, and got off to a good start on Tuesday, beating Manheim Central, 2-0. Caroline Wroblewski and Taylor Hamlett scored, and Claire Valentine posted the shutout in the win.
  • The District 11 champions beat District 12 runner-up, Little Flower, 3-0 in a rare playoff match shortened due to weather conditions.

2A

South Park (20-2) vs Villa Marie (17-5) – 2 pm – at Slippery Rock

  • These two teams are no strangers to playing each other at this stage. Villa Maria has beaten South Park in their past four PIAA playoff meetings.
  • The WPIAL Champion South Park had its way in the opening round, with a 3-0 win as Haleigh Finale scored twice and Danielle DeProspo added the third goal. Ali Miklos also held on for another clean sheet.
  • Villa Maria has won five of its past six matches, including a 5-0 win over Karns City to advance to the quarterfinals. Sarah FailsAbby GrychowskiKailey OrlandoCambrie Longo and Ella Raimondi all had goals for the Victors.

1A

Shady Side (13-4) vs Bentworth (18-3) – -1 pm – at Mars

  • Bentworth, the WPIAL runner-up, advanced to win its first-ever PIAA match on Tuesday, with a 5-2 win at Brockway.
  • Shady Side are the defending PIAA champions, but lost to eventual WPIAL Champion Freedom in the semifinals of the district playoffs, and are looking to get back to Hershey for the third straight season with senior Krystna Rytel leading the way.
  • The Indians won its first round PIAA match, beating Windber, 2-0 on Tuesday.

Freedom (21-1) vs Wilmington – 12 Noon – at Slippery Rock

  • This Freedom squad keeps lighting up the scoreboard. After an 8-2 win to capture the WPIAL title over Bentworth, they hammered Rockwood for a 7-0 win in the first round of the PIAA

John Krysinsky has covered soccer and other sports for many years for various publications and media outlets. He is also author of 'Miracle on the Mon' -- a book about the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, which chronicles the club, particularly the early years of Highmark Stadium with the narrative leading up to and centered around a remarkable match that helped provide a spark for the franchise. John has covered sports for Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, DK Pittsburgh Sports, Pittsburgh Sports Report, has served as color commentator on Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC broadcasts, and worked with OPTA Stats and broadcast teams for US Open Cup and International Champions Cup matches held in the US. Krysinsky also served as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at his alma mater, Point Park University, where he led the Pioneers to the first-ever winning seasons and playoff berths (1996-98); head coach of North Catholic boys (2007-08), associate head coach of Shady Side Academy boys (2009-2014).
