Hope this young man is okay. Just not the kind of thing you want to read…
The Quaker Valley player is taken out in an ambulance. Word is it’s a significant leg injury. Still working to identify him. #TribHSSN

3:34 – GOAL – SSA goes up 4-1. Crazy stuff going on in this SSA-Mercyhurst game. Adrian Beckford scores off a rebound after MP stops a PK.
3:20 – Interesting things happening early in the 2A games:
Deer Lakes’ Michael Sullivan strikes in the fifth minute. His shot from about 20 yards out somehow gets through a maze of players and finds the back of the net.
Lancers lead Quaker Valley, 1-0.
And….
Max Farner with two early goals for Shady Side — as they quickly race out to 2-0 lead vs Mercyhurst.
2:35 – FINAL at Peters — Greensburg Central Catholic beats Seton-LaSalle, 1-0, to advance to 1A semifinal. Will they get a WPIAL final rematch with Avonworth?
2:25 – it’s still 1-0 GCC leading Seton-LaSalle late in 2nd half
1:55 – at the half, GCC leads Seton, 1-0
1:02 – as reported by Trib’s Bill Beckner… Greensburg Central Catholic without two KEY starters: senior Luke Mort and sophomore Rico Ciccarelli — both out with leg injuries sustained in last game. Major losses.

BOYS QUARTERFINAL SCHEDULE / MINI-PREVIEWS
Below you’ll find the schedule with all the remaining WPIAL teams (in bold), by classification, for Saturday’s boys quarterfinal round.
4A
Seneca Valley (18-2-1) vs Abington (20-2-0, District 1 runner-up) – 3 pm – at Chambersburg
- Seneca Valley needed overtime to extend its season in the first round against Hempfield. Now they’ll travel all the way to Chambersburg.
- With no other WPIAL teams remaining in the boys 4A bracket, the Raiders will have to travel some distances for each game they advance.
- Abington, who lost to Central Bucks West in the District 1 championship, advanced to the quarterfinal with an impressive 4-0 win vs Emmaus on Tuesday.
3A
West Allegheny (20-2-0) vs Hershey (District 3 champions) – 2 pm – at Altoona (Mansion Park Stadium)
- The Indians bounced back from its WPIAL final loss to Franklin Regional, by taking care of business, beating Bradford, 4-1 on Tuesday.
- Nate Dragisich, Evan Blunkosky and Will Douglas (2 goals) each scored for West Allegheny in the win.
- The district 3 champions had no problem on Tuesday either, beating District 12 runner-up Franklin Towne, 3-0.
Franklin Regional (19-0-1) vs Cathedral Prep (20-1, District 10 champions) – 4 pm – at Slippery Rock
- Cathedral Prep pulled out a 1-0 win over WPIAL third-place Thomas Jefferson in the first-round, even playing down a man. Now comes an even bigger challenge.
- The Panthers continued on a roll, after winning WPIAL title last Thursday, they handled Bellefonte with ease on Tuesday in the PIAA opener, 5-0.
- Prep is on an 11-game winning streak since its lone loss to Walsh Jesuit 1-0. The Ramblers survived the PIAA first round despite playing the entire second half a man down after Jack Foht received a red card against Thomas Jefferson. He will not be able to play Saturday because of the ejection. Liam King came through with a late goal to send the Ramblers to the quarterfinals.
2A
Quaker Valley vs Deer Lakes (19-1-1) – 3 pm – at North Allegheny
- A battle of WPIAL section champions. Quaker Valley were upset by Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL final after rolling through 2A competition this season.
- Deer Lakes were equally impressive this season, outscoring opponents 91-15.
- This is a match that many thought would be the boys 2A final, but the two teams that lost to Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL playoffs are excited about this match up.
“I would say that we are definitely looking forward to this matchup,” Jordan Wiegand, Deer Lakes coach, said. “We were looking for this earlier and didn’t get the chance.”
Shady Side Academy (13-6-1, WPIAL Champions) vs Mercyhurst Prep – 3 pm – at Mars
- The reigning two-time WPIAL champs, Shady Side, continue to find ways to win, beating Bedford, 1-0 in the first round.
- The Lakers are making their fourth straight trip to the PIAA playoffs. Mercyhurst Prep’s only losses this season are to D-10 4A champion McDowell and Fairview. The Lakers feature top scorers Gino Romeo and Jarrett Harry.
- Mercyhurst are coming off a resounding 6-1 first-round win vs St. Mary’s.
1A
Greensburg Central Catholic (18-2) vs Seton-LaSalle (19-4) – 1 pm – at Peters Township
- This is a rematch of WPIAL semifinal that Greensburg Central Catholic won 2-1.
- The Rebels picked up a 1-0 victory against the District 9 champion thanks to a score 25 minutes into the first half by junior Ethan Gardner. He hooked in a corner kick for his 13th goal of the season. Goalie Sam Reinhart made four saves to preserve the shutout.
- Greensburg Central’s Luke Mort, Dylan Sebek and Sean Gargan scored its 3-2 victory over Iroquois in the PIAA first round.
- Mort, a Pitt recruit, and Rico Ciccarelli both left the game with leg injuries. Mort returned and is expected to play Saturday. Ciccarelli’s status is unknown.
- GCC last made the state semifinals in 2009 when it also faced Seton LaSalle and lost 2-1 at Chartiers Valley.
Avonworth (20-0-1) vs Rockwood (20-2) – 3 pm – at Peters Township
- Avonworth will continue to rely on a solid defensive group that’s been mostly impenetrable this season. They didn’t give up a goal in the WPIAL playoffs until the final vs GCC. In PIAA opener, they still won fairly comfortably, 4-1, over West Shamokin.
- Rockwood won its first ever PIAA playoff game on Tuesday, beating Lancaster Country Day, 2-0, as Noah Gerhard’s goal late in the first half gave them the lead.
- Both sides have been solid defensively all season, as Rockwood’s allowed only seven goals in 22 games and Avonworth — just eight in 22 games.
