The one thing we know will happen on Tuesday is that three WPIAL boys teams will advance to the PIAA soccer finals in Hershey on Tuesday as there will be three all-WPIAL match-ups in the semifinal round. The seventh remaining WPIAL team, Seneca Valley, 4A champions, will also have a chance to reach the State final with a win against District 1’s fifth place Radnor as they venture all the way to Chambersburg for the second time in four days.

GAME PREVIEWS

Bold – represents WPIAL school

4A

Seneca Valley (19-2-1) vs Radnor (18-3-2) – 6:30 pm – at Chambersburg

  • it’s a Raiders vs Raiders match-up!
  • This year’s WPIAL Champions, Seneca Valley, will be trying to make it to the PIAA finals for the second time in the past four years, as they last advanced this far in 2015, when they finished third in WPIAL, but still made it to the PIAA final.
  • In Saturday’s quarterfinal win vs Abington, Jackson Wotus scored the only goal of the game for Seneca Valley.
  • Raiders goalkeeper Will Gallagher notched his ninth shutout of the season.
  • For second time in four days, the Raiders will have to cross the state and play at Chambersburg High School.
  • It’s been quite a run for Radnor, who were the fifth place team to come out of a packed District 1, but have made it all the way to the PIAA semifinal with wins over Cumberland Valley and State College in the first two rounds.

The winner will take on the winner of Wilson vs Unionville – 7 pm – at Upper Perkioman

4A boys final to be played Saturday, November 17, 6:30 pm – Hershey Park Stadium

3A

Franklin Regional (20-0-1) vs West Allegheny (21-2-0) – 8 pm – at Fox Chapel

Click here for John Krysinsky‘s featured game preview for more on this match-up

  • This will be a rematch of the WPIAL final played at Highmark Stadium on November 1 when Franklin Regional won a hard-fought contest, 1-0.
  • In the PIAA’s, West Allegheny have been impressive, taking care of business in the first round last Tuesday, beating Bradford, 4-1, then beating Hershey 3-1. The Indians lost senior goalkeeper Braden Wurst to injury and it’s uncertain if Wurst will play on Tuesday. He has not missed a game in goal for West A since his freshman year.
  • Duquesne commit Nate Dragisich has scored three times with Evan Blunkosky and Will Douglas each chipping in with a pair of goals in West Allegheny’s two wins in PIAAs.
  • Franklin Regional have not slowed down since winning the WPIAL title, beating Bellefonte with ease in its first-ever PIAA playoff game, 5-0, then pulled out a 1-0 win over Erie Cathedral Prep when another underclassman came through with a game winner, Jake Sciorilli scored in the 70th minute.

Winner will face the winner of Strath Haven vs Archbishop Wood – 7 pm – at West Chester

3A boys final to be played Friday, November 16, 6:30 pm – Hershey Park Stadium

2A

Shady Side Academy (14-6-1) vs Deer Lakes (20-1-1) – 8 pm – at Mars

  • These two teams know each other all too well. This will be the fourth time these two section rivals meet this year — and it will be a true rubber match. In the regular season, en route to an unbeaten regular season, Deer Lakes beat Shady Side once (3-1), and the teams tied (2-2) in section play. Shady Side returned the favor by handing the Lancers its only loss of the season in the WPIAL semifinal, 1-0.
  • Deer Lakes, a team that only starts a few seniors, have bounced back nicely after the playoff loss by winning its first-ever PIAA playoff match vs Fairview, 1-0, in the first round. Then they knocked out the defending PIAA champions, and WPIAL foes Quaker Valley. Now they have a chance to avenge its only loss of the season in the ‘rubber match’ vs Shady Side.
  • Shady Side continues to defy conventional wisdom. After winning hard-fought, low-scoring close matches in the WPIAL playoffs against Deer Lakes (1-0) then Quaker Valley (1-1, pk’s) and against Bedford (1-0) in the first round of the PIAA playoffs, they exploded for seven goals in a wild, 7-5, victory over Mercyhurst Prep in the quarterfinal round.
  • Shady Side, with two consecutive WPIAL titles to its credit, certainly has a more experienced squad than Deer Lakes. The Indians used that experience to its advantage in the WPIAL semifinal win, frustrating the Lancers while holding on to a 1-0 lead in the second half. Deer Lakes players were pressing and clearly rattled, even having one player sent off in the second half. Deer Lakes coach Jordan Wiegand has done an excellent job of getting his young team to rebound since that loss, but now he’ll have to figure out how to find a way to beat the unconventional Indians, who play multiple goalkeepers and have numerous scoring threats.
  • These teams have one thing in common, each will be playing for a significant milestone as neither school’s boys program has ever reached a PIAA final.

Winner will face the winner of Midd West vs Fleetwood – 7 pm – at Central Dauphin

2A boys final to be played Saturday, November 17, at 1:30 pm – Hershey Park Stadium

1A

Avonworth (22-0-1) vs Greensburg Central Catholic (19-2) – 6 pm – at Fox Chapel

  • It’s another WPIAL final rematch on the slate Tuesday.
  • Avonworth will try to keep an unbeaten season going all the way to the PIAA final, but will face a determined Greensburg Central squad that rallied from a 2-0 deficit in their previous meeting, only to fall short in penalty kick shootout.
  • The Antelopes have put together a couple of solid wins in the PIAAs thus far, beating West Shomokin 4-1, in the first round, then coming from behind late to beat Rockwood, 2-1, capping off the rally with a late penalty kick by Owen North.
  • Greensburg Central have held on for a 3-2 win over Iroquois in the first round, but lost two key players, Luke Mort and Rico Ciccarelli to leg injuries. Even without two, GCC squeaked out another playoff win against WPIAL foe, Seton-LaSalle, 1-0. Mort, a Pitt recruit, who scored 35 goals this season, tried to play on Saturday, but was noticeably limping.

The winner will face the winner of Faith Christian vs Millvale – 5 pm – at Central Dauphin

1A boys final to be played Friday, November 16, 1:30 pm – Hershey Park Stadium
