Last year, with a few days before the season, we received somewhat surprising news that the Riverhounds had picked up Collins John, a former Fulham striker.
Today, just a few days before their opener the Riverhounds have announced they’ve picked up a few new players, but this time it was a move out of necessity to fill a glaring need.
With injuries to some of their key players on their back line, and with another called up to play for the Canadian national team, the Riverhounds added Willie Hunt and Jereme Raley to their roster today.
Hunt and Raley were brought in after the Hounds realized that Matt Dallman, Sterling Flunder and Drew Russell won’t be ready for the season opener on Saturday. due to injuries.
Flunder was dealing with hamstring and Russell, after playing much of their last preseason match vs Charleston, had a swollen knee. Dallman’s been dealing with leg injury for most of March and is clearly not ready.
Tyler Pasher is also unavailable for Saturday’s home opener against the Harrisburg City Islanders at Highmark Stadium after he was called into the Canadian national team’s exhibition games against Guatemala and Puerto Rico this weekend.
Hunt, 27, signed his first professional contract with the Atlanta Silverbacks in 2011. He helped the team win the North American Soccer League’s spring season in 2013 and was a substitute in the Silverback’s Soccer Bowl loss to the New York Cosmos that year.
Greenville, S.C. native Hunt spent last season with the NASL’s Tampa Bay Rowdies. He is a central defender that can play anywhere across the back line.
Raley, 22, enters his rookie season as a professional after four years at Maryland.
