USL, Riverhounds Schedule Released

Pittsburgh soccer fans, you can start marking your calendars.
The USL has released its schedule.   Click here for the complete, 30-game Pittsburgh Riverhounds 2016 league schedule.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds will be part of 2016 league alignment that include 29 teams, with two conferences.  The Eastern Conference will include 14 teams.  Each team will play home-and-home games against each opponent in their Conference, then play other regional rivals a third time.  The top eight teams in each conference will earn playoff berths.
At first glance, there will be numerous highlights on the schedule that looks strikingly similar to 2015 start that had the Hounds at home in three of the first four matches, including the home opener versus defending USL Champs, Rochester Rhinos, on Saturday, April 2.
Other highlights include:

  • The return of the Keystone Derby series, that will renew on April 9, between the Riverhounds and Harrisburg City Islanders in the second game of the season.  The Hounds will host the City Islanders in two of the three meetings, with the return match between the Hounds and City Islanders at Highmark Stadium will be on the now Annual Fourth of July game which will be on a Monday this year.
  • There will be three matches against a new additional in-state rival, Bethlehem Steel FC, an expansion franchise operated by MLS’ Philadephia Union.  The Hounds will visit Goodman Stadium at Lehigh Valley twice, as the first game between the two sides will not be until Sunday, July 10.
  • The other regional rivals that Pittsburgh will play more than twice will be Rochester and the new Cincinnati FC franchise.
  • The Hounds will get a chance to avenge their playoff loss to the NY Red Bulls II as the teams will have a rematch at Highmark Stadium on May 7.   In one little unique scheduling note (and it might be an error from USL) the Hounds return match vs NY Red Bull II in at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ is scheduled for 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 28.  Apparently, the Red Bulls MLS team is playing at 7 p.m. vs Toronto FC that night too.

Once again, the USL schedule will be very friendly on travel and days between rest.  It appears that the Hounds will play seven of their 30 games on weekdays, and many of them will be include at least three, four or more days rest between games.
It appears that most every home game on the Riverhounds schedule will start at 7 p.m. (no daytime games) and all but 4th of July game (Monday) and the third (Wilmington) and second to last games of the season will be played at home in August and September on Wednesday nights.
The season finale will be at home against FC Cincinnati on Saturday, September 24.
