From University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department report
PHILADELPHIA – The Pitt men’s soccer team (0-1-1) dropped an in-state battle with Temple (3-0-0), 2-1, Friday afternoon at the Temple Sports Complex.
Junior Roosevelt Angulo netted the lone goal for the Panthers in the 12th minute, while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Mikal Outcalt made a career-high eight saves.
“It was another experience in our growth as a program and team,” head coach Jay Vidovich said. “We were able to get our first goal on the road and it was a fine one. We were able to lead at the half, which was a goal that we set as a team. Going into the second half I thought we did a tremendous job, but we lost our focus and collective play. However, we made progress today by starting a match on the road with a goal and opening the second half in a positive way.”
Temple came out of the gates looking to score, earning two corner kicks in the seventh and ninth minutes but wouldn’t be able to convert. Just a few minutes later, Angulo made his way past numerous Temple defenders down the ride side, drawing goalkeeper Alex Cagle out of the goal. With an empty net, Angulo put in Pitt’s first goal of the season.
In the 22nd minute, freshman Josh Coan sent in a shot that was saved by Cagle.
The Owls offense continued to put the pressure on throughout the remainder of the first half, totaling nine shots.
The second half started much like the first as Temple sent in a shot in the 50th minute but Outcalt made a one-handed save. Five minutes later, the Owls fired in another shot that was saved.
In the 61st minute, Temple’s Jorge Gomez Sanchez took a shot that was saved by Outcalt and his teammate, Carlos Moros Gracia, would put in the rebound for the equalizer.
The Owls attempted three more shots on goal before sending in the game-winner in the 86th minute.
Temple out-shot the Panthers 20-3 and had a 6-2 advantage in corners.
Pitt resumes action Sunday, Sept. 4 at Saint Joseph’s for a 7 p.m. start.
