The University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team lost a conference clash with No. 2 Florida State on Saturday, 2-0.
Despite the defeat, the Panthers were able to hold their own against the Seminoles’ perennial women’s soccer program.
Florida State struck early for a pair of goals. The Panthers were able to settle down and didn’t concede a goal following the Seminoles outburst, as the defense was able to minimize the amount of dangerous opportunities surrendered.
The Seminoles were able to convert on an early corner kick in the second minute when redshirt senior Kristen Crowley deposited a header into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
In the eighth minute, sophomore midfielder Kaycie Tillman volleyed a cross from sophomore midfielder Megan Connolly past Francis to extend Florida State’s lead.
The early lapse was too much for the Panthers to overcome against the Seminoles stingy defense, which has allowed just two goals in 11 games.
Pitt pushed offensively, especially as the game wore on in the second half. The Panthers registered eight shots total, five of them on net.
Pitt’s eight shots are the most against Florida State in the two program’s history of meetings, dating back to 2013. Pitt’s 15 shots surrendered, stands as the least amount of shots allowed in their four meetings.
Florida State had 15 shots in the game, forcing senior goalkeeper Taylor Francis into five saves.
With the loss, the Panthers record fell to 1-10-1 and 0-4-0 in the ACC. The Seminoles improved to 9-1-1 and 3-0-1 in conference play.
The Panthers next matchup is on the road against No. 3 Virginia (8-2-1, 1-1-1 ACC) on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. Pitt will then return home and welcome the Miami Hurricanes (7-4-0, 2-1-0 ACC) for a Sunday matinee on Oct. 9 beginning at 1 p.m. The home game will serve as Senior Day.
