Pitt Women Drenched By #18 UNC, 3-0 #ACC #PghSoccer

The University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team fell 3-0 to No. 18 North Carolina on Thursday in a rainy evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

The start of the game was delayed nearly 90 minutes as inclement weather pounded the Pittsburgh area.

“I thought the first half was really good from our standpoint,” said head coach Greg Miller. “It was fairly wide open, and we had some chances. We just have to be better at taking advantage of those opportunities.

“In the second half they scored two good goals, although I thought that if our pressure would have been a little bit better that those could have been preventable opportunities. We had a couple of opportunities ourselves to finish, and we didn’t quite do that. Not to sound repetitive, but that’s been kind of the way that our season has gone, where we’ve given up some preventable goals, and we’ve missed some opportunities to stay in the game or make the game interesting. We just have to take more ownership of that as a staff, as well as our kids, and we’ve got to learn from it and move on.”

With just over 15 minutes to go in the first half, North Carolina’s Bridgette Andrzejewski ripped a shot from the right side of the box that found its way to the top right corner of the net for the Tar Heels’ first goal.

Pitt was able to keep the score at just 1-0 at the end of the first half, but North Carolina scored two goals in less than two minutes early on in the second half to put them ahead comfortably, 3-0.

The Tar Heels posted 11 shots in the match, seven of which were on goal. Pitt goalkeeper, Taylor Francis was able to save three of those seven shots on goal. The fourth stop for the Panthers came by way of a team save when defender Seyla Perez prevented a rebound opportunity from finding the back of the cage.

With the loss, Pitt drops to 2-13-1 on the year, and 1-7-0 in conference play. The Panthers next match will be their final home game of the season, as they host No. 4 Duke Saturday for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Ambrose Urbanic Field.
