MIDWAY, Ky. — Point Park University men’s soccer had another heart breaker on Saturday, and this one ended the season with a 1-0 loss at Midway (Ky.) University in the River States Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.
Midway (10-7-1, 6-2 RSC) scored with two seconds left in regulation to eliminate Point Park (9-9-1, 3-5 RSC). It is the first time in six years that the Pioneers will not play in the conference semifinal round with 2010 being the last time they didn’t get that far.
Joe Jessop scored the game-winner for the Eagles at 89:58 when he struck a one-timer from 30 yards out. It was a line-drive that was unassisted. The ball came to Jessop after bouncing off a group of players who were battling for the ball in the final seconds.

“It was one of the best goals I have seen in college soccer in quite some time,” said Point Park head coach Jeroen Walstra. “It was a beautiful goal. He hit it out of the air and on a line to the upper 90 of the goal.”

There was nothing the Pioneers defense could do to stop it, and there was not time to answer. It was one of four shots on goal for Midway. There were not a lot of chances to go around with Midway holding a 9-8 edge in shots and a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
Point Park had a few chances during the game but could not make the scoresheet. Midway’s best chance other than the game-winner was when Jessop, a midfielder, hit the crossbar earlier in the game.
The Pioneers end the year at .500 overall at 9-9-1. It is the sixth year in a row that Point Park has had a winning season. The program had zero winning seasons in the 12 previous years from 1999-2010.
Saturday’s loss was another tough defeat on the season. Point Park took the No. 6 seed in the playoffs and had to go on the road to No. 3 Midway, that after taking four of its five conference losses by a single goal and three of them in overtime.
Midway advances to the RSC Tournament semifinals, where it will play at No. 2 seed WVU Tech (15-1-2, 7-0-1 RSC), the No. 10-ranked team in the NAIA.
