From Point Park University Athletic Dept. report
COLUMBIA, Ky. – For the second year in a row, Point Park University women’s soccer was bested by No. 2 seed Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College, 3-0, in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round in Columbia, Ky. Saturday.
The Pioneers’ (10-8-2) defense made an impressive showing like it had all season, holding the Blue Raiders to only seven shots (four on goal).
The only other teams to hold Lindsey Wilson (16-3) to under 10 shots were No. 1 seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) (7), No. 7 seed University of Northwestern Ohio (8) and Georgia Gwinnett (9).
It was a defensive battle the entire first half, and Point Park had two good chances to score 10 min in.
Lindsey Wilson’s Delfina Santellan sped away from PPU defenders to score in the 28th minute, her fourth of the season.
The Blue Raiders scored again minutes later when a corner kick by Ivana Damnjanovic found Yvonne Ploeg who chipped it in over Pioneer goalkeeper Rebecca Cohen’s head in the 35th minute to put Lindsey Wilson ahead, 2-0, heading into halftime.
Junior Izzy Hunter had a good chance to cut the lead with 10 minutes left in the half, but could not find the back of the net.
Point Park and Lindsey Wilson had three shots a piece in the first half.
The Pioneers matched Lindsey Wilson’s speed and intensity, holding the Blue Raiders scoreless for 50 minutes after the 35th minute goal.
A nice ball by Hunter in the 67th minute just missed Chloe Hampy in front of the goal.
Point Park had great opportunities to score with 15 minutes left in regulation, but just missed on passes and shots.
With less than 10 minutes left to play, Hunter hit a rocket just wide of the goal.
A foul in the box awarded the Blue Raiders a penalty kick in the 86th minute, and Ploeg sunk it in the back of the net to seal the deal, 3-0.
Lindsey Wilson heads to Orange Beach, Ala. to face No. 15 Columbia (Mo.) in the NAIA National Championship Second Round Nov. 28-29.
