Here’s a snapshot look at some of the Pittsburgh area teams, and how they fared this past week — and the look ahead to this coming week.
PITTSBURGH RIVERHOUNDS
It was a wild one at Toronto on Saturday, as the Hounds salvaged a 1-1 draw against a determined TFC II bunch that included six MLS players in its line-up.
While the Hounds had numerous scoring chances in the first half, and early in the second, they fell behind after Toronto’s Tsubasa Endoh beat Hounds keeper Trey Mitchell in the 59th minute on a redirected one-timer from a low ball into the box.
Romeo Parkes’ persistence finally paid off. Parkes had a golden opportunity for the equalizer in the 70th minute, but the Jamaican forward’s shot was turned away by TFC II keeper Angelo Cavalluzzo. Parkes’ redemption came in the 83rd minute, as he capitalized on a free kick to get the equalizer. After Corey Hertzog and Kenroy Howell stepped over the ball, Parkes delivered a ball that got through the TFC II wall and into the left side of the goal.
While the Hounds (4-5-5, 16 points) remain winless in their last four games, they remained right in the mix of the playoff line, now sitting in ninth place with a match coming up this week against Louisville City FC.
I’ll have more coverage and a feature on the Hounds later in the week.
FORT PITT REGIMENT
It was a tough weekend for Pittsburgh’s NPSL team, dropping two road games at Erie (1-0) and at Dayton (2-1).
The Regiment are now 1-3. Fort Pitt’s lone goal over the weekend was an own goal by Baye Ali Kebe.
They will stay on the road Saturday, where they will take on FC Buffalo. The Red Coats will return next week, with a Tuesday, June 20 return match at home against Erie.
STEEL CITY FC
Pittsburgh’s women’s team also suffered a tough loss over the weekend, 5-1 at Shady Side Academy against Motor City FC to drop its record to 2-2. SCFC will return to action this Sunday at Shady Side against Alliance Academy, who they beat in the season opener on the road, 2-0.
