RIVERHOUNDS 1, BETHLEHEM STEEL FC 1
Boxscore: USL Match Center
This had to be a draw that felt like a loss for the Hounds.
The Hounds fumbled an opportunity to take three points on the road, playing against an inexperienced Steel FC line-up that included numerous academy players making pro debuts.
After an exciting first half, the pace of play slowed down in the second half, as the Hounds held most of the possession, but were unable create many chances in the final third.
For the Hounds (5-7-6, 21 points), this result marks their second straight road draw, while Steel FC pick up a point to stay in the top five spots in the USL’s Eastern Conference.
An entertaining first half included two goals scored only moments apart.
The Hounds controlled most of the possession (55%) in the game, but Steel FC created a number of dangerous chances, forcing Hounds goalkeeper Keasel Broome into making two quality saves in the first half, and eventually setting up the penalty kick goal.
The Hounds capitalized as outside back Shannon Gomez‘s runs forward paid off with a nice service into the box that set up Chevy Walsh‘s third goal of the season in the 29th minute.
Unfortunately for the Hounds, midfielder Victor Souto fouled Steel City FC’s James Chambers, elevating his foot on a challenge in the box that hit the attacker in the face.
Chambers slid his penalty attempt past Broome in the 31st minute to level the contest.
With numerous regular players out of the line-up due to other commitments (senior club Philadelphia Union called up a number of players for friendly at home in Chester, PA, against English team Swanson City). All three substitutes for Steel FC, Brenden Aaronson, Tiger Graham and Seth Kuhn, were making their USL debuts coming out of the Philadelphia Union Academy.
The Hounds return to action next week, again on the road to take on Rochester Rhinos on Saturday, July 22.
