The Riverhounds battled league-leading Charleston Battery to a 2-2 deadlock at Highmark Stadium on Wednesday for its fourth straight draw as Romeo Parkes picked up a pair of assists on goals eminating from corner kicks, and the team’s leading scorer Corey Hertzog finally broke through for his first goal since early June.
“We had lots of opportunities — and in the end we let this one slip away,” Dave Brandt, Riverhounds head coach said. “I am imploring the team to understand how capable they are. For the past 14, 15 months, this is a group that has second guessed themselves. That has not believed in themselves. There’s been clicks, factions. Too much junk going on, and a lot of that stuff is out the door. I think we’re poised to go. And three points would have been super helpful tonight.”
Instead, what the Hounds (5-7-8, 23 points) were left with was an unsatisfying result on a night where they battled back to take a 2-1 lead after conceding an early goal.
After posting two clean sheets in the past three games, the Hounds back line struggled to contain a dangerous Battery attack that was whipping in balls into the box with regularity. Despite generating a lot of possession and capitalizing on a pair of corner kick goals to pull ahead in the contest, the Hounds were left with another draw after conceding a goal in the 84th minute.
