#PghSoccer Q&A: Hounds keeper Trey Mitchell "will be working to get back"

On Thursday, Riverhounds announced that the team’s primary goal keeper this season, Trey Mitchell, would be out for the season with a recurring shoulder injury.

Shortly after the announcement, I had a chance to catch up with Mitchell, who posted six clean sheets in seventeen appearances in his first season in Pittsburgh, as it was his first opportunity to play regularly as a professional after spending three years in Major League Soccer as a reserve with LA Galaxy and then as a league pool keeper.

In a short period of time in Pittsburgh, Mitchell quickly developed into being very accessible to media types like myself, and was someone who really embraced the opportunity here in Pittsburgh. He’s also been one of the guys who’s been eager to help and want to make a difference in the community. Mitchell, along with a few other players, has regularly visited with patients at Children’s Hospital Rehab Unit.

Here’s some exerpts from my Q & A after the news was released that he would be out for the season.

I’m sure you are disappointed with having the season cut short, but what did it mean for you to get this opportunity this year to play with the Riverhounds?

It was a major blessing to have the opportunity to spend my 2017 season with the Riverhounds. My main priority going into this 2017 season was to get as many minutes as I could under my belt, and help our organization have a successful year in the process.

And to have the season cut short for you while the team was making a push to earn a playoff spot — what is your feeling?

It is a frustrating situation to be in and something I was hoping to avoid. I believe God has a plan though and there’s a reason for it. In regards to the playoff push, I have full confidence in the boys… Corey (Hertzog) is about to catch fire and go on a scoring streak, Chevy (Walsh) is gaining confidence, Kevin (Kerr) and Romeo (Parkes) solid and consistent, Victor (Souto) and (Stephen) Okai are getting stronger together, along with Taylor (Washington), Jamal (Jack), Tobi (Adewole), and (Ritchie) Duffie continuing to do their jobs in the back… I like our chances in making the playoffs and going on a run.
Matt (Perrella) is also capable of helping us win games and this Saturday he gets to go up against his old team so he is already motivated.

I understand that you may have had to pop the shoulder back into place when you re-injured it on Saturday. Was that the case? How much pain were you in playing on Saturday?

After the PK save my shoulder subluxed so it didn’t fully dislocate this time which helped us put it back in on the field. For the rest of the game it was pretty painful and tightened up a lot. After the ref blew the final whistle I was very relieved to not have to go full stretch again.

What is your outlook on the injury — and will there need to be surgery? Do you hope to return to Pittsburgh next season?

Currently I am scheduled for surgery on Sept. 1st and will start the rehab process shortly after. In regards to next season, I will be working to come back next season stronger then before.
