Duquesne earns "quality win" in shutout of Illinois St, 1-0

From Duquesne University athletic department report
Duquesne got a goal from Linnea Faccenda in the 20th minute and 10 saves from goalkeeper Kyra Murphy to defeat defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Illinois State, 1-0, Friday night on Rooney Field.

“We got a good goal early, a well-worked goal. The second half they really put us under some pressure, especially in the first 20 to 25 minutes. We had to hold on, defend well and keep our shape and we did,” Al Alvine, Duquesne head coach, said. “We also had a couple of good chances to score on the counter attack. Kyra has been a rock for us in the goal all year and she had to make some big saves for us tonight. That was a quality win over a quality team.”

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Duquesne got on the board in the 20th minute when Faccenda collected a loose ball from a scrum in front of the net and tapped it past Haley Smith for her team-high third goal of the season.
• Three minutes later, Murphy punched away an Emily Dickman shot from close range.
• Murphy made another one-handed save in the 25th minute to rob ISU’s Kelli Zickert.
• Murphy had seven saves in the first half that ended with the Dukes up 1-0.
• ISU’s Ashley Santos put one off the right post in the 67th minute.
• Duquesne’s Lauren Bell made a long run and rolled one of the left post in the 77th minute.
• Illinois State outshot Duquesne 21-13, including 10-7 on goal, but could not find a way past Murphy.
STAT OF THE GAME
With her assist on Faccenda’s goal in the 20th minute, junior Katie O’Connor moved into second on DU’s all-time points list with 50. O’Connor trails only Audra Mathews, who posted a school-record 75 points from 2004-07.

The Dukes are idle until Sept. 8 when they host Xavier at 7:00 p.m. on Rooney Field.
