US Open Cup

Night of excitement for lower divisions, amateurs (US Open Cup 1st Rd results)

Detroit FC advances on PKs - Photo courtesy US Soccer

The first round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is in the books.

Below you’ll find the complete list of the results, but the excitement from the first round of U.S. Open Cup is something very unique — providing the amateurs and lower division clubs with a chance to be a part of something special and prestige of advancing and playing against higher division teams.

Of local interest, the Erie Commodores came away with its first-ever win in Open Cup — beating Rochester River Dogz in a match that went to penalty kicks (1-1, 5-4 PKs). This sets up a match next week — where the Commodores will be hosting the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC at Gannon University on Wednesday, May 16. This match-up should provide a fun backdrop and create a nice buzz for soccer in Northwestern PA in the week to come.

In addition to the scores below — I thought it would be fun to capture just a few snippets from the excitement and highlights from first round as folks all across the country were getting swept up in the euphoria of a knockout tournament that includes the heart and soul of American soccer — the local clubs and amateurs.

#USOC2018 1st Round Highlights

How’s this for a ridiculous goal?

It’s the first time of year in the US when games go to extra time — and PKs become a thing

No MLS team in Detroit? Just fine with these folks…

Wins provide a chance to play the pros.

And, who doesn’t love a 7-4 scoreline? (other than Bob Lilley)

Fourth division NPSL and PDL did well, but there were qualifiers and amateurs that got through…
