Plenty of fireworks this week in Pittsburgh soccer

Strictly from a local, Pittsburgh soccer standpoint, this past weekend provided very little in the way of any games or news to share. That allowed some extra time for all of our PSN contributors for a bit of a breather and also catch up on the beginning of the World Cup knockout round action. All three of the area teams were not in action this weekend.

That will change this coming week.

In fact, it will be the final week of regular season action for both Steel City FC and Fort Pitt Regiment.

The Regiment are having a resurgent season (6-4 overall record), will wrap-up with two tough matches. First they’ll host Erie Commodores at Slippery Rock University on Thursday, July 5 (7 p.m. kickoff) then travel to Rochester, NY to take on the Rochester Lancers.

The Regiment are currently in third place in the standings, and would need to win its final two matches — and get some help to advance to the NPSL Midwest Region playoffs. Only the top two teams from in the seven team East Conference qualify, as the Regiment are currently sitting in third place.

Steel City FC (2-4) wrap up its season with a Saturday road game vs Elmira Revs in Buffalo, then return for Sunday finale at Ellis School vs Columbia Eagles this weekend.

Riverhounds SC will continue to look to stay near the top of the USL Eastern Conference table when they host North Carolina FC in its annual Fourth of July match, then travel for a rematch north of the border with Ottawa Fury FC on Sunday. We’ll have a lot more on the Hounds-NCFC match leading up to the match.

Word has it that only a few tickets remain the sixth Fourth of July match in Highmark Stadium history.
