From Point Park University Athletic Dept report / Kevin Taylor

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Point Park University men’s soccer began its season on Saturday night with a 5-1 victory at Thiel College. The Pioneers and Tomcats were knotted a 1-1 since late in the first half, but Victor Lorente‘s go-ahead goal in the 75th minute broke the tie and sent Point Park on its way to the victory.

Kay In’t Ven followed that up with two goals in the 80th and 83rd minutes to put the game away. Point Park’s first four goals of the game were scored by newcomers with the first one coming from Geert Bijl, a transfer from Missouri Valley College, in the 20th minute. Lorente came over from University of Northwestern Ohio while In’t Ven joins from University of South Carolina.

Trenton Fowler added a goal in the 87th minute to set the final of 5-1. Picking up assists during the game were Tadeo D’Apollo and Ricardo Merced. Point Park split the goalkeeper duties between Juan Somoza and Ryan Daniels, who shared the starting duties last year and are both back.

The Pioneers (1-0) play again on Monday night for their home opener versus PSU-Beaver. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Highmark Stadium. Follow the Pioneers all season long at PointParkSports.com and on social media @PointParkSports
