Pitt women drop first match of season, 4-0, at TCU

Pittsburgh women’s soccer team’s unbeaten streak came to an end at national powerhouse TCU Thursday evening, as the Panthers fell on the road 4-0.

TCU got on the board first, converting a penalty kick in the 16th minute to grab a 1-0 advantage.

The Horned Frogs would add to their advantage as the minutes ticked off in the first half, scoring in the 42nd minute to take a 2-0 lead at the break.

In the 64th minute, TCU would take a 3-0 lead on a shot from 12 yards out. The Horned Frogs captured a 4-0 advantage they wouldn’t surrender in the final minutes of the game.

Amaia Pena tended net in the first half, tallying four saves and allowing two goals. Freshman Katherine Robinson would make her collegiate debut in the second half, recording three saves.

Offensively, Fox Chapel product Dixon Veltri tallied a pair of shots, while Celia Lopez, Mikayla Schmidt and Bethany Rasile adding one each. Pitt forced TCU keeper Katie Lund to make four saves as the Panthers were shut out for the first time all season.

It was a homecoming of sorts for Pitt’s new coach, Randy Waldrum, a Texas native, who had been instrumental in building strong programs at Tulsa University and Baylor University before moving on to lead Notre Dame to a pair of National Championships.

The Panthers will return to action Sunday, taking on North Texas at 1 p.m. EST in the finale of the Texas road swing at North Texas.
