Duquesne men open A10 with comeback to draw St. Joe’s

Manel Busquets and Larson scored to help Duquesne rally for a draw in its Atlantic 10 opener against St. Joseph’s on Saturday night at Rooney Field.

Dukes go to extra time again, lose 2-1 at VCU

After its exhilarating come-from-behind OT win on Thursday, Duquesne’s women’s team went the distance again on Sunday, only to fall to VCU in double overtime.

CiCi Fox’s header in the 107^th minute lifted VCU over Duquesne 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Duquesne got on the board first when Abby Losco stole the ball, dribbled 20 yards and placed it past VCU keeper Audrey Sanderson on the left side in the 34^th minute.  The Dukes almost went ahead 2-0 off the foot of Lexy Kendro, but her shot hit the right post – the rebound came to Katie O’Connor, but her shot sailed high.

The Rams’ Kelly Graves got the equalizer in 84′ to make the match level in eh 84^th minute

Tori Kopchak was stopped on a diving save by Sanderson in the 97^th minute. Senior Kyra Murphy finished with nine saves.

VCU outshot DUQ 25-11 and had eight corner kicks to the Dukes’ two

This was the third straight overtime game for the Dukes as they’re now 1-1-1 in extra time matches

“It’s always disappointing to put so much into a game and come away with nothing but that’s soccer,” Al Alvine, Duquesne’s head coach, said. “It was a really hard fought game between two determined and committed teams. Our schedule certainly doesn’t get any easier next weekend, but I know our kids are looking forward to playing at home versus George Washington on Thursday.”

 

RMU Men open conference play with weekend split 

Robert Morris University men’s soccer took a split on its weekend road trip to open the Northeast Conference (NEC) play.

On Friday, they lost 2-0, to Bryant (RI), but on Sunday, the Colonials bounced back, topping Sacred Heart, 3-1.

At Sacred Heart, Robert Morris (3-7-1, 1-1-0 NEC) used two second-half goals to cancel out a quick equalizer. Sacred Heart (1-8-1, 0-2-0 NEC) owned the shot advantage, 20-16, but only managed to put six attempts on target compared to the Colonials’ seven.

A foul in the box gave RMU its first goal in the 20th minute, as Guilherme Fanck stepped up to the spot and buried a penalty kick. His second goal of the season was answered quickly as Thomas Santilli found the scoresheet in the 24th minute.

The game-winning goal came in the 49th minute, courtesy of Zac Sherman. Sherman’s team-leading fourth tally of the season was his first in five contests, and it came off an assist from Owen Pearce.

The visitors kept the pressure on in their pursuit of an insurance goal, forcing a pair of saves out of Robert Strain on attempts by Christian Coridon and Pearce. The senior midfielder would ultimately provide that third tally, slotting home a pass from Sherman for his third goal of the season.

Winter Fondi made five saves to earn the victory.

Robert Morris returns home for the first time since Sept. 15 on Sunday, Oct. 7 when it hosts St. Francis Brooklyn at noon.

Farabaugh scores but RMU Women Lose at FDU, 3-1

A comeback attempt by the Robert Morris University women’s soccer team was thwarted late in the second half as Fairleigh Dickinson topped the Colonials, 3-1, in Northeast Conference (NEC) play on Sunday.

Robert Morris (3-10-0, 1-2-0 NEC) saw its recent string of success against Fairleigh Dickinson (3-7-3, 1-1-1 NEC) come to an end, as the Colonials had previously won the last two meetings.

The Knights dented the scoreboard in the 23rd minute as Andrea Garcia corralled a pass from Elma Kolenovic, and buried a left-footed shot from the top of the box.

RMU responded with a pair of chances by Jane Schleicher, (Montour) as she dragged her first shot wide of the netting then forced Amanda Fitzgerald into a save.

FDU doubled its lead in the 49th minute, as Garcia found the head of Viktorija Miseljic with a free kick.

The Colonials grabbed one back in the 75th minute when freshman from Bethel Park, Bailey Farabaugh slotted home a deflection in the box. The goal was the first of Farabaugh’s career.

Samantha Lackner pushed an equalizing attempt wide right in the 80th minute. Five minutes later, the hosts put the game away as Noam Kedem found the top right corner with a strike.

Sydney Bruckner made nine saves in defeat.

Robert Morris completes its road swing on Friday, Oct. 5 at 3:00 p.m. against Mount St. Mary’s.

 

Point Park rallies to draw unbeaten WVU Tech 

Point Park University men’s soccer earned a hard-fought result versus unbeaten WVU Tech on Saturday night at Highmark Stadium.

Marc Bentley‘s tying goal in the 80th minute knotted things up at 1-1, and the score remained that way after a double-overtime game that went late into the night.

Point Park (5-4-1, 1-2-1 RSC) took its time and made sure its free kick with 10 minutes remaining in regulation was a good one. Defender Ricardo Dip came up to take the attempt from just above the left side of the box. He found fellow center back Bentley for a header and the tying goal.

 

WVU men beat Delaware, 2-0, as Kellogg scores twice

A pair of second-half goals by junior defender Ryan Kellogg led the West Virginia University men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Delaware on Saturday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Kellogg recorded his first two-goal game of his career as the Mountaineers (6-4) shut out the Blue Hens (2-7) for their fourth clean sheet of the season. WVU improved to 4-1 at home this year and is unbeaten in 15 of its last 19 nonconference contests in Morgantown.

“It wasn’t a whole lot to fix, it was just our inspiration, our motivation,” LeBlanc said of WVU’s response following Tuesday night’s loss. “It was our not thinking we were going to show up and win games because of what we did in the games prior. We competed tonight and I thought it was a really, really good performance and we scored a couple of really good goals.”
