For one half, it sure looked like Pitt’s women’s soccer team were on its way to its first ACC win under new coach Randy Waldrum, but ultimately they fell short to Miami, 3-2, Thursday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

“We had a good first half,” said head coach Randy Waldrum. “We had control of the game at that point and it was just disappointing to see it slip away in the second half.”

The Panthers (4-7-1, 0-5-0 ACC) set the tone early in the first half as redshirt senior Ashley Moreira scored her second goal of the season in the 42nd minute. Sophomore Aideen O’Donoghue (Canon-McMillan) would extend the Panthers’ lead in the 44th frame, netting her second career goal.

Pitt would fumble coming out of the gate in the second half as the Hurricanes (5-6-2, 2-3-0 ACC) netted three to regain the lead. Freshman Gudrun Haralz would score all three of the Hurricanes’ goals, scoring in the 51st, 78th and 89th minutes.

O’Donoghue, Anna Rico and Mariona Segales led the Panthers with two shots apiece as Pitt attempted 10 shots, four on goal, in the game. Freshman keeper Katherine Robinson made her third start of the season, playing the first 45 minutes, tallying three saves. Amaia Pena would suffer the loss, making four saves in the second half.

The Panthers return to action Sunday, hosting ACC rival Clemson in a 1 p.m. kickoff at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The game will serve as the team’s retro game with the Panthers donning throwback kits.
