From Robert Morris University report
Robert Morris’ men’s soccer team picked up its first home victory over St. Francis Brooklyn since 2010, topping the Terriers, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in Northeast Conference (NEC) action from the North Athletic Complex.
Robert Morris (4-7-1, 2-1-0 NEC) exacted some revenge against St. Francis Brooklyn (4-8-0, 1-2-0 NEC) with the victory after falling twice to the reigning NEC champion last season.
The Colonials used a strong defensive effort from their back line and Winter Fondi in goal, holding onto the lead despite an 8-4 disadvantage in shot attempts over the final 45 minutes.
Neither team could muster much of a scoring opportunity in the first half. RMU’s best chance came in the 30th minute when Andrea Lubbia tipped Zac Sherman’s one-touch curler from outside the 18 over the bar.
The Terriers nearly made it 1-0 in the 55th minute, but Fondi stepped up to make a save on Yoann Assoumin’s header attempt. Soon after, Oeyvind Skjesol slid in at the last second to dislodge the ball on a dangerous attack forward.
Following the strong stand in the defensive half, RMU rewarded itself with a goal in the 57th minute. Sherman split a pair of St. Francis Brooklyn defenders and was first to reach a long over-the-top pass, then took one touch before chipping Lubbia for his team-high fifth goal of the season.

The visitors turned on the pressure after conceding, enjoying much of the remaining possession in their offensive half. Fondi’s best save of the afternoon came in the 63rd minute when he stuck a leg out to deny Tomas DeAndrade in the box.
Two of Fondi’s five saves came following the Sherman goal. The back four of Skjesol, Raffaele Vio, Noah Elamin, and Matt Cillo withstood a constant Terrier attack in the final 30 minutes, blocking a pair of shots, including one off a corner kick in the closing seconds.
Fondi’s clean sheet was the 10th of his career, moving into sole possession of fifth all-time at RMU. It was also the redshirt senior’s fourth shutout of the season, a number that leads the NEC.
Robert Morris continues its trek through the NEC on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 3:00 p.m. when it travels to Fairleigh Dickinson.
