Adidas High School Notebook: Playoffs are coming!

This will be a rather abbreviated edition of the High School Notebook, as we’ve been focused on providing nightly/early morning postings of scoreboard results as the regular season comes down to the wire.  Nightly updates include scores and a list of teams that have cliched playoff spots.

We’ve had numerous nominations for Adidas Players of the Week, so thanks to all those who submitted. Those will be announced on Wednesday.

This week’s PSN Featured Game — Deer Lakes vs Freeport (Thursday, October 11, 7 pm)

On Thursday, we’ll continue our Featured Game series that will include a Facebook Live broadcast with Riverhounds play-by-play man Matt Gajtka, live on-site reporting by yours truly, and Ed Thompson with photography.

We are looking forward to this Class 2A Section 2 match-up featuring one of the few unbeaten teams remaining Deer Lakes (12-0-1, 9-0-1 in section) hosting one of its neighboring rivals Freeport. When the teams played earlier in September, Freeport gave the Lancers a battle, losing 4-3 on its home turf.

We’ll have more on this match-up in the days to come.

The playoffs are coming!

Pittsburgh Soccer Now will have all of the WPIAL playoff pairings and brackets shortly after they’re released on Wednesday, October 17.

We will have select on-site game coverage of the first three rounds of the playoffs, along with scoreboard and live file updates each night there are playoff games. In addition, we are planning to be there for the WPIAL finals.

The playoffs are slated to begin on Saturday, October 20 and will run through the WPIAL finals scheduled to be played at Highmark Stadium on November 1, 2 and 3.

The PIAA (state) playoffs will begin on Tuesday, November 6, and run through November 16-17, when the finals will be played in Hershey, PA.

In addition, I will be jumping back on Pittsburgh Sports Live with a special guest to preview the WPIAL playoffs late next week. Look for more details about that in the coming week.

GAMES TO WATCH

Wednesday, October 10

4A Girls / Section 2 – Upper St. Clair vs Moon (Section title still up for grabs but USC will need Peters Twp to lose and get a few wins)

1A Girls / Section 2 – Bentworth vs Chartiers-Houston (can Bentworth run through its section unbeaten? Second place CH would like to challenge that notion)

Thursday, October 11

4A Boys / Section 1 – North Allegheny vs Pine Richland (standings are tight so a winner secures playoff spot)

2A Boys / Section 1 – South Park vs Elizabeth Forward (two playoff bound teams that are jockeying for position)

2A Boys / Section 4 – Deer Lakes vs Freeport (we’ll be there to see if Deer Lakes can remain unbeaten)

1A Boys / Section 4 – Seton LaSalle vs Brentwood (two top teams in section 4, Rebels won 4-3 first time they played)
