Point Park men lose playoff opener to Brescia, 2-1

A number 3 seed heading into RSC Conference tournament play, Point Park University men’s soccer dropped its home playoff game to No. 6 seed Brescia (Ky.) University, 2-1, on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Montour Sports Complex.

The Bearcats got the winning goal by Anthony Reilly in the 65th minute to break the 1-1 tie and notch the victory in the RSC Championship quarterfinal game.

Brescia (8-9-1, 4-4-1 RSC) advances to play at No. 2 seed WVU Tech in the RSC semifinals on Nov. 7. Point Park ends its season at 10-6-1 overall, 5-3-1 RSC. The game was played a Montour Run with the regular home venue of Highmark Stadium hosting WPIAL finals games.

Point Park erased a 1-0 deficit with Mitchell Roell‘s goal in the 19th minute. Tadeo D’Apollo took a free kick from right of the box, and he found Roell on the run right near the goal line. Roell leaped up and redirected it into the goal with his foot to tie things up.

Brescia had taken the 1-0 lead on Jean Laurent’s goal at the 15:25 mark. A long pass up ahead to Karim Ndoye beat the left side of the Pioneers’ defense, and Ndoye dropped it off to Laurent, who was trailing the play, He stepped into a nice pass and buried the shot from straight on and 20 yards away.

The score remained a 1-1 the rest of the half. Reilly’s eventual game-winner came on a header after Sam Coxon put in a cross for the assist.

Point Park had its chances the final 25 minutes but could not find the net. Brescia’s shots were more on target with its 18 total shots including 15 on goal. Point Park got 17 shots but too many missed with just nine on target.
