4A

Peters Twp (18-4) vs Souderton (14-3-6) – 4:30 pm – at Chambersburg

  • In each of its first two PIAA playoff contests, Peters has rallied with go-ahead goals in the second half. After falling behind early in its match last Tuesday vs Erie McDowell, Peters raced back for three unanswered goals to advance to the quarterfinal. They did it again on Saturday, as Jillian Marvin broke a 1-1 tie in the 46th minute. Cece Scott scored in both games for Peters.
  • PT is trying for its fifth PIAA final appearance since 2003. The Indians won state titles in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

  • Souderton returns to Chambersburg where they defeated the other WPIAL team in the 4A bracket, Seneca Valley, on Saturday in a match that went to penalty kicks. Souderton erased an early 1-0 deficit then edged Seneca Valley, 4-3, in penalty kicks eliminating the WPIAL champions from the state tournament.

The winner will take on the winner of Ehprata vs Pennridge – 5 pm – at West Chester

4A girls final to be played Saturday, November 17, 4 pm – Hershey Park Stadium

3A

Oakland Catholic (20-1) vs Blue Mountain – 6 pm – at Bald Eagle

  • The WPIAL champion Eagles, who are now riding a 20-game winning streak, opened the PIAA playoffs last Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Holidaysburg, then had enough firepower to beat WPIAL foe Hampton, 2-1.
  • There will be no rematch of the WPIAL final vs Mars, as the Fighting Planets were beaten, 1-0, by Blue Mountain.
  • The District 11 champions beat District 12 runner-up, Little Flower, 3-0, in the first-round, in a rare playoff match shortened due to extreme fog, before beating a Mars squad that got hung up in traffic on the way to Saturday’s match.
  • Hannah Henn has scored three goals in the PIAA playoffs – with two coming in the second half to beat Hampton.
  • The Eagles have been solid defensively, only conceding two goals since the WPIAL playoffs started in October, with goalkeeper Maggie Storti doing her part. On Saturday, when Hampton was pouring on the attack in the first half, Storti made five saves.
  • This is the furthest Oakland Catholic has ever advanced in the PIAA soccer tournament.

The winner will take on the winner of Villa Joseph Marie vs Mechanicsburg – 7 pm – at Hamburg

3A girls final to be played Friday, November 16, 4 pm – Hershey Park Stadium

2A

South Park (21-2) vs Bedford (20-0) – 6 pm – at Somerset

  • South Park finally got over a PIAA playoff hump of sorts, by finally beating Villa Marie on Saturday, 3-1. VM kept eliminating the Eagles from the state playoffs in recent years, but that changed on Saturday when junior Grace Albitz scored two goals on direct kicks and Avery Miklos converted a corner for a 3-0 lead that held up.
  • Even though she was without a goal on Saturday, South Park primary goal scorer this season has been Haleigh Finale, a junior who scored 37 goals in the regular season
  • Undefeated District 5 champion Bedford are back in the PIAA Class AA girls soccer semifinal for a second consecutive season.
  • Bedford’s go-to scorer is Amber Thomas who scored both goals for the Bisons in a 2-1 win over defending PIAA champion Mercyhurst Prep, including the first on a penalty kick. She now has 143 goals in her career.
  • Mercyhurst is the only common opponent for the two sides, as South Park lost to them in the season opener in August, 2-1, while Bedford has the aforementioned win.

The winner will take on the the winner of Lewisburg vs Boiling Springs – 5 pm – at Hamburg

2A girls final to be played Saturday, November 17, at 11 am – Hershey Park Stadium

1A

Shady Side Academy (14-4) vs Freedom (22-1) – 6 pm – at Mars

  • This is the only remaining all-WPIAL game in the PIAA playofs and it will be a rematch of the WPIAL semifinal when Freedom beat Shady Side, 2-1. In the PIAA playoffs — these two squads turned up their scoring.
  • The Bulldogs, led by the Freshman-Senior sister scoring combination of Myla Sharpless and Jayden Sharpless, are now the reigning WPIAL champions after bulldozing their way through the WPIAL Final (beating Bentworth 8-2), and the first two rounds of the PIAA’s (7-0 win over Rockwood, then 6-0 smashing on Wilmington).

“Playing with my sister is honestly one of the best feelings in the world,” said Mayla Sharpless, who came back in time for the playoffs, after a severe knee injury last season. “My whole season, I just want to come back and share a few minutes with her even if I’m not 100%, just to share a few minutes with her. Every goal she scores I get excited for her as much as when I score. Honestly, it’s amazing.”

  • The Indians made an offensive statement of its own on Saturday, racing out to a 10-0 win against another WPIAL school, Bentworth. They’re are a win away from playing their third consecutive PIAA championship after Krystyna Rytel scored four goals. Callie Davis and Autumn Casey scored twice each in the blowout win.

The winner of this match will take on the winner of East Juniata vs Southern Columbia – 6 pm – at Danville

1A girls final to be played Friday, November 16, 11 am – Hershey Park Stadium
