Girls & Women in Sports Day brings together Pittsburgh’s female sports teams

Later this evening, the 2019 Girls & Women in Sports Day will be celebrated, beginning at 6 p.m. at the YWCA on Frankstown Avenue in Homewood.

Steel City FC’s Stephanie Harrison is the brainchild of this very worthwhile initiative as she hopes that this becomes the first of an annual event bringing together Pittsburgh’s female sports teams.

The Girls & Women in Sports Day event will feature representatives from five local women’s sports teams in five sports: Steel City FC as well as the Pittsburgh Passion (football), Pittsburgh Forge (rugby), Steel City Roller Derby and the Pittsburgh Banshees (gaelic football).

Other women in sports days have been held this year by Duquesne and Chatham, both in conjunction with a women’s basketball game.

The YWCA event has a post-college focus, and Harrison wants female athletes to know they can continue their careers in Pittsburgh and don’t have to give up their sport or move far away.

The event will feature demos, giveaways, and there will be a Women in Sports Q&A panel. The panel will feather women who operate in a wide variety of roles within the athletic community.

The event is free, and more information can be found on the Facebook event page https://www.facebook.com/events/237614610494649/  or contact steelcityf.c.pittsburgh@gmail.com
