On Sunday, the Riverhounds SC played its second scoreless draw of the weekend against  the University of Charleston (WV) on Sunday at Highmark Stadium, following up a nil-nil encounter against Duquesne on Friday.

In 360 minutes of action, the Hounds have yet to surrender a goal in four preseason scrimmages.

“Today was the toughest opposition we’ve played, and I think we had the majority of the ball and we played in their half the majority of the game,” head coach Bob Lilley said. “I think there were some good things that we can build off of this week. Next week we play Pitt and Bethlehem Steel, and we’ll find out a lot more next week when we have those two games.”

Kevin Kerr provided the Black and Gold with their best scoring chance of the first half with a blast from inside the penalty box in the 13th minute. A diving save from Charleston’s goalkeeper kept things tied at 0-0.

In the 32nd minute, the Hounds had another opportunity. A cross from defender Jordan Dover found the head of Steevan Dos Santos, but the forward placed the ball well over the crossbar.

The second half began the same way the first ended with the Hounds dominating possession, but still unable to score.

Forward Christian Volesky opened up the half with a blast from the halfway line, which sailed over Charleston’s cage. Volesky found another chance to break the game open in the 51st minute, but sent a diving header just wide.

Anthony Velarde lofted a corner kick to Volesky in the 86th minute, but once again Charleston’s goalkeeper kept the Hounds off the board. The header from Volesky was the final chance for the Hounds on the afternoon.

DUQUESNE HANG TOUGH VS HOUNDS

The Boys from the Bluff provided the Hounds with a hard-fought contest on Friday night.

In the first half, the Hounds’ best opportunity to break the nil-nil score came off the foot of Neco Brett. The striker blasted a hard shot at the net, but the Duquesne goalkeeper collected his take in the 18th minute.

After the half, fellow striker Volesky had a great chance to break the 0-0 score in the 66th minute. Directing a diving header toward the frame after Dos Santos sent a ball across the goalmouth, his try ultimately went wide of the target.
