Steel City FC have a chance for winning season on Saturday

Pittsburgh, Pa. — Comparing last year to this year, Steel City FC has grown.

The team compiled a record of 2-5-1 last season. This season, Steel City FC doesn’t have as much competition, since they switched teams in their conference. This year, SCFC features against Pennsylvania-based teams. Last year, the team traveled to Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.

Steel City FC has an even record this year, sitting in second place in the Keystone Division. The record is 3-3-1 and this Saturday, Steel City FC has a chance to have their first winning season in the club’s history. However, SCFC will not win the division, as Penn Fusion SA has an undefeated 6-0 record.

There was only one season — in 2017 — where Steel City recorded a .500 record.

Steel City bests Torch FC at home

Goalkeeper Jess Neill continues to show off her skill.

The goalkeeper made 15 saves to keep an impressive shut out against Torch FC, a club based in Nockamixon Township. Despite having a goal scored, Neill was the star for Steel City FC in this match.

That goal scorer was Krystyna Rytel a product of Shady Side Academy. Her goal came in the first half, slipping it right past goalkeeper Hannah Wise. Her shot came from 40-yards out of the goal on a free kick.

Both teams traded shots at each other for the next 71 minutes. However, both goalkeepers had strong performances.

Lehigh Valley gets knocked at home

In their final home match of the season, Steel City FC hosted the team they’re looking to beat this Saturday. While Lehigh Valley did snag a goal, SCFC put three goals in the back of Miranda Royds and Cassidy Landis’ net. Royds featured longer in net than Landis.

Lehigh Valley took the lead only three minutes into the match. However, their lead didn’t last long. Mount Aloysius product Cheyenne Kuncher scored the equalizing goal in the 27th minute, off an assist from Naomi Matthusen, who attends Queens University of Charlotte.

Meanwhile, Jansen Jamison helped Steel City FC claim the lead early in the second half, after goalkeeper Neill made two back-to-back saves to keep the match level. The final, game-winning goal came from Seton Hill University product Mel Renda.

Saturday’s big test

The regular season ends on Saturday.

The match against Lehigh Valley will be held at 4 p.m. ET. Good luck to SCFC as they attempt to earn their first winning season.
