Pitt women end non-conference schedule with 1-0 loss at Liberty

FINAL: Liberty 1, Pitt 0

From University of Pittsburgh athletic department report

Pitt’s women’s soccer team wasn’t able to end their non-conference slate on a high note as they fell 1-0 on the road to the Liberty Flames at Osborne Stadium in Lynchberg, VA on Sunday.

Pitt held the 12-8 edge in shots but were shut out for the second straight match. This was the final non-conference match for Pitt (3-4-1), before beginning ACC play later this week.

We once again showed our youth by giving away a goal, and by missing many chances in front of the goal this afternoon. That’s three games we’ve given away this year,” Pitt head coach Randy Waldrum said. “At some point we have to clean up these mistakes, so that will continue to be our focus moving forward. I am disappointed for our players as they have not seen the results for their hard work.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the second minute, Anna Bout had the first shot of the match as she ripped a long distance attempt on goal but the Liberty keeper made a nice stop.
  • Amanda West had a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the sixth minute as she took a feed from Sydney Marasco and broke in alone on goal but the Liberty keeper made a great save diving to her left.
  • In the eighth minute, Juliana Vazquez blocked a would-be goal by the Flames off the foot of Grace Spade.
  • In the 25th minute, Anna Bout had a chance to open the scoring but the Liberty defender blocked her shot and cleared it out of harm’s way.
  • A couple minutes later, Amanda West raced into the Liberty box and took a shot that was scooped up by the Liberty keeper.
  • The Flames were able to get on the board in the 50th minute as Gabrielle Farrell beat Amaia Pena for her first goal of the season.
  • In the 58th minute, Pena made a big stop to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Liberty.
  • The Panthers had their best chances to score in the 64th minute as Amanda West had a header poked wide of the net and on the ensuing corner kick, Aideen O’Donoghue found a rebound and the Liberty keeper made a huge stop to send the ball out of bounds.
  • Anna Rico had the final chance to tie the match up in the 85th minute but her attempt went wide of the Liberty goal as the Flames secured the 1-0 win.
