WPIAL boys soccer scoreboard (10/14/19)

Here’s the WPIAL boys soccer scoreboard for the final Monday of the regular season.

There were still some teams battling for playoff spots and section titles. — and more senior nights!

One big match neither coach could afford to rest any key players took place this afternoon between Winchester-Thurston and Greensburg Central Catholic in Class 1A, Section 2, where PSN’s No. 2 ranked Bears beat No. 1 ranked Centurians, 3-2, to capture a share of the Section title.

This result leaves both teams finishing the season 11-1 in section. Winchester-Thurston has a 13-1 overall record, and with the win could make a claim to earn the top overall spot in the upcoming playoffs. Look for GCC to grab a high seed too.

Also, Ed Thompson was on hand for a non-section clash between 1A Bentworth and the last unbeaten, and untied team this season, 2A Charleroi in a cross-classification clash.

On the narrow pitch at Bentworth, the Bearcats raced out to a 3-0 lead, and held on for a 4-3 win to end Charleroi’s unbeaten season. In the same classification with the likes of Quaker Valley, Deer Lakes and Shady Side Academy, Charleroi should still get consideration among the top four.

IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW: TIE-BREAKER RULES OUTLINED

In the case where there are ties for section titles, and also in other spots in the standing, here’s the WPIAL’s tie-breaking rules:

The top (4) four teams and ties that CANNOT be broken in each classification will enter the
WPIAL tournament. All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the following method: Three (3) points for a win, one (1) point for a tie. Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and each will be declared champions and will receive a section winner’s plaque. Those teams will enter the tournament; and if the teams tied for first play equal the maximum for sectional qualification, NO OTHER TEAMS WILL BE ENTERED INTO THE TOURNAMENT.

In classifications with four (4) or fewer sections, if three teams are tied for first, the second-place team will enter as the fourth section representative. In the event of a tie for second, third, or in some cases fourth place, the Tie Breaker  System will be employed. If a tie persists, head-to-head competition will determine the qualifier. In the event of a multiple tie, the following tie breaker will be employed:

1. Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
2. The team that has the best won/loss record in head-to-head competition among the tied teams
only will be the qualifier.
3. If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter the tournament.
