PIAA Semifinals: Mars girls cruise 5-1, to advance to Hershey; Franklin Regional’s run ends

With weather playing a factor, the PIAA semifinal schedule was reduced to two WPIAL schools in action on Tuesday evening: Mars girls and Franklin Regional boys in their respective Class 3A match-ups.

The other matches originally scheduled for Tuesday with WPIAL teams, will now be played at Hampton and Slippery Rock on Wednesday. See below for previews for those matches.

Boys Class 3A

FINAL:  Lower Dauphin 2, Franklin Regional 0  (at Mansion Park Stadium, Altoona)

Updates:

It’s now a final. For the first time since last year’s PIAA final, Franklin Regional loses, 2-0 to Lower Dauphin. It was also the first time the Panthers have been shut out in 35 straight games.

It was a remarkable run for Franklin Regional this season (17 shutouts, 8 goals allowed).

The WPIAL champs 2019 campaign ends with a 21-1-1 overall record.

The winner will take on the winner of Strath Haven vs Archbishop Wood on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Hershey.

Girls Class 3A

FINAL:  Mars 5, Archbishop Wood 1, (at Bald Eagle)

It’s a return to the PIAA finals for Mars, as they won big. Leading the Planets included Taylor Hamlett with a hat trick, plus Aly Cooper and Gracie Dunaway each scored goals. Assists came from Samantha King with two and Ellie Coffield and Erin Rodgers each with an assist.
