From Point Park University Athletics / Sports Information

OWENSBORO, Ky. — Point Park University women’s soccer ended its long layoff and started River States Conference action with a 4-0 shutout at Brescia (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon. It was the first game for the Pioneers since dropping the season opener Sept. 12 at nationally ranked Grace (Ind.).

The win was the first career victory as a college head coach for Point Park’s John Newbery. The Pioneers’ first-year coach was a longtime assistant at NAIA Cumberlands (Ky.).

Point Park (1-1, 1-0 RSC) got off to a great start versus Brescia. Athena Beck scored off a corner kick for a 1-0 lead. Before the first half was through, the Pioneers added two more goals to assert control. They added one more for good measure in the second half as four different Point Park players notched a goal. Taylor Goldstrohm, Nola McGuire and Kylee Bobak were the other goal scorers.

Point Park’s goalkeepers earned a combined shutout. Sarah Malinsky got the start and played the first half. Ella Serlin subbed in for the second half and kept the clean sheet going.

Saturday’s game started a busy stretch for the Pioneers. Point Park is right back in action Tuesday at Carlow and Thursday at home versus Midway (Ky.) for two more RSC games in less than a week.
