WPIAL Girls Class 1A Soccer Playoffs

Final: Springdale 4, Bentworth 1

While there was no homefield advantage for eighth seeded Springdale (2nd Section 1 Class A), they were more than comfortable in taking out ninth-seeded Bentworth (3rd Section 2 Class A), 4-1 at Norwin High School in WPIAL Girls Class 1A first round playoff match-up on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

From the start, Springdale took control of the possession. Keeping the ball in the Bentworth defensive half and earning a corner, followed by a foul that led to a corner which led to a goal. The goal came from the corner kick of Julia Parfitt and found the foot of Isabella Walsh for the one-touch goal just minutes into the game.

Minutes later, a Springdale shot directed at goal by Miranda Shock created some havoc for the Bearcats. with a bouncing ball that sent goal keeper Jasmine Manning sprawling to make the save.

Springdale dominated possession in the first half, creating several chances that just could not find the net. Several balls barely glanced over the crossbar for the Dynamos along with a few timely saves from Manning helped keep the game close for Bentworth.

Springdale continued their dominant ways to start the second half forcing Bentworth’s goalkeeper right back into action.

Finally, Miranda Shock was able to extend the lead to two for Springdale with a blast from 25 yards out with plenty of power behind it as Jasmine King was able to still get her fingertips on it but it slid under the crossbar.

Bentworth started showing some life and some speed as both Reagan Schreiber and Cassidy Sicchitano got behind the defense but on each occasion Springdale’s goal keeper Caity Stec came off her line and turned the shot away. The third time would be the charm as Reagan Schreiber this time slipped it past the oncoming Stec to pull a goal back and make it 2-1 with just over 16 minutes left in the game.

“We made it 2-1 with 15 to go. (We) pushed numbers and players up — and ultimately conceded the final two goals,” Tyler Hamstra, Bentworth’s coach said.

Springdale would continue to apply pressure and Springdale’s Grace Gent struck twice before anyone could blink.

A cross from Isabella Walsh would find the head of Gent for the 3-1 lead, then within a minute — she capped off the scoring for her final goal to give the Dynamo a commanding 4-1 lead.

Springdale will move on to play the winner of Greensburg Central Catholic and Riverside.

Ed’s Takeaways

Springdale were superb in possession. Keeping it for very long stretches in Bentworth’s half. Getting 35 shots off, 26 on goal and nine corners.

Bentworth, a young team can build from this. With Junior goal keeper Jasmine Manning back next year, they’ll be able to have a solid defensive foundation. She had a remarkable 22 saves in today’s loss.

They Said It: Bentworth Head Coach Tyler Hamstra

“I’m very proud of the girls this year . We are really young and had a bad spurt of injuries .  It was many of the girls first start in playoffs and we looked nervous and very hesitant.  Springdale’s physicality ,we did not come close to matching and it dictated way too much of the game. Hopefully we get a traditional offseason not too hampered by COVID(-19). We have a lot of work to do, but the girls are dedicated.”
