Weather moves Pitt’s spring season opener vs Akron to Sunday

Pitt’s men’s soccer match vs Akron, originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20, has been moved to Sunday, Feb. 21 due to weather concerns.

According to various weather reports, while there is not any snow expected, the temperatures are expected to peak at a high of 23 degrees on Saturday, while the forecast projects that temperatures will improve to nearly 40 degrees on Sunday.

Kick-off is slated for 3 PM with ACCNX covering the game.

The match is the first regular season tilt for both squads.

Pitt entered this week ranked third and eighth in the TopDrawerSoccer and CollegeSoccerNews polls, respectively. Akron received a ranking of sixth (TopDrawerSoccer) and 26th (CollegeSoccerNews).  The United Soccer Coaches Poll, which Pitt topped its rankings for five weeks in the Fall season, has not been released for the Spring.

The Panthers resume play after a 7-1 fall season that saw them play in the ACC Championship Final. Akron will be playing its first official contest since November 2019, a year in which they finished 6-10-2 but won the MAC regular season championship.

This week, Pittsburgh Soccer Now’s John Krysinsky caught up with a pair of Pitt seniors, Matt Bailey and Bryce Washington, and filed this story.
